Titel: Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) Written by ...
DESCRIPTION OF ITEM: Autograph letter with the signature AE (short for Albert Edward) on Turf Club, Piccadilly embossed letter headed paper written to Percy Doyle Esquire. In the letter Edward thanks Doyle for ‘the charming paper cutter’ which ‘will be most helpful here’. The letter comes complete with the front of its original envelope (postmarked May 6th 1880) addressed in Edward’s hand. HISTORICAL CONTEXT: The Turf Club was founded in 1861 and moved to Piccadilly in 1875. Later described as ‘probably the most exclusive club in London’ (London Clubs: Their History and Treasures - Neville 1911), it was actually the place where the rules of whist were originally drawn up by its members. With Edward not advancing to the throne until Victoria’s death in 1901, he goes down in history as one of the longest heir apparents in British history. Leading a colourful life in the gentlemen’s clubs and theatres of London, he had numerous mistresses (including the actresses Lillie Langtry and reportedly Sarah Bernhardt). The recipient of the letter is Percy Doyle Esquire. After a diplomatic career culminating in becoming the British Minister Plenipotentiary in Mexico, Percy Doyle found himself embroiled in a widely publicised financial scandal in the early 1870’s when he agreed to serve as a Director of The Emma Silver Mining Company. The company advertised for investors in London and attracted very large amounts of money on claims that it owned a mine in Utah containing vast amounts of silver. However, it later emerged that the mine had long since been exhausted and that the share issue had been a scam, albeit without the knowledge of Doyle and his fellow Directors including General Schenck (the American Minister in London).
