Steinar Kvale is Professor of Educational Psychology and Director of the Centre of Qualitative Research at the University of Aarhus, and adjunct faculty at Saybrook Institute, San Fransisco. He was born in Norway and and graduated from the University of Oslo. He continued his studies at the University of Heidelberg with an Alexander von Humboldt scholarship, and has been a visiting professor at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, and West Georgia University, Carrolton, and the University of Bergen . His long-term concern has been with the implications of such continental philosophies as phenomenology, hermeneutics, and dialectics for psychology and education. He has studied examinations and grading, and is the author of Prüfung und Herrschaft (1972). He has edited Issues of Validity in Qualitative Research (1989) and Psychology and Postmodernism (1992). Together with Klaus Nielsen he has edited Mesterlære - Læring som social praksis ( Apprenticeship ? Learning as Social Practice, 1999) and Praktikkens læringslandskab ? At lære gennem arbejde ( The learning landscape of practice ? Learning through work, 2003)
Catherine Marshall is Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Once a teacher in Rhode Island, studies and career moves include doctoral studies at University of California, Santa Barbara, a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, Los Angeles, and faculty positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Vanderbilt University before moving in 1991 to Chapel Hill. The ongoing goal of her teaching and research has been to use an interdisciplinary approach to analyze cultures-of schools, state policy systems, and the professional development of adults working in organizations. She has published extensively about the politics of education, qualitative methodology, and women's access to careers as well as about the socialization, language, and values in educational leadership. She is the author of Reframing Educational Politics for Social Justice, Leadership for Social Justice: Making Revolutions in Education, Culture and Education Policy in the American States and Designing Qualitative Research, and other books, as well as numerous articles on the administrative career, especially the entrant, the assistant principal.
Dr. Joseph Wronka is Professor of Social Work, Springfield College, Springfield, MA, and Principal Investigator of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Project, originating in the Center for Social Change at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, Brandeis University. Dr. Wronka recently received a Fulbright award, being placed on their Senior Specialists Roster with the major discipline of social work and subspecialities in poverty, social justice, human rights, psychology, and existential-phenomenology. His Ph.D. in Social Policy is from the Heller School?s Center for Social Change. His Master?s is in Existential-Phenomenological Psychology with a Clinical-Community concentration from Duquesne University. He had also studied the phenomenology of the performing musician at the University of Nice, France. Select academic appointments included: West Georgia College, St. Francis College, New York University, Ramapo College, College of the Holy Cross, Simmons, Chukchi Community College, the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, Boston College, and schools of social work at Berne, Switzerland, Sankt-Poelton, and Vienna, Austria. He was also a counselor at alcoholism and methadone maintenance treatment centers, clinician in private practice, and community mental health centers, director of a mental health/substance abuse center, human rights commissioner; served as vice-president of the World Citizen Foundation, and currently is board member to the Coalition for a Strong United Nations.
Published widely in popular and scholarly fora, he has presented his work in roughly fourteen countries. His interest is primarily the development of social change strategies to implement human rights standards, which mirror substantively millennia of teaching in various spiritual and ethical belief systems, so that every person, everywhere can live with human dignity and to their potential, without discrimination. He likes to swim laps; ride his bike; and play classical music on the piano and concert and ethnic pieces on the accordion.
