Inhaltsangabe: This is an entertaining, authoritative, and highly anecdotal look at the golden era of Canadian pop music-the historically important decade that gave birth to such internationally respected recording artists as Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Ian & Sylvia Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot, Murray MacLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, Buffy Saint Marie, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Ronnie Hawkins. In the bohemian sixties, Toronto's Yorkville neighbourhood was a hippie haven-our version of Haight-Ashbury or Greenwich Village, a place where coffeehouses like the Riverboat and the Purple Onion offered a creative mecca for musicians from across Canada. They came from Saskatoon and Winnipeg, from Vancouver and Edmonton and Halifax. By the middle of the sixties, they had forged an adventurous, original sound that the American music press proclaimed "a fresh wind from the north". It was Canadian music's first wave of international success. In researching the book, Jennings conducted more than 100 interviews with musicians, managers, club owners, booking agents, and record company executives including Gordon Lightfoot, Murray MacLauchlan, Bruce Cockburn, among many others. Many of those he's interviewed have provided the author with period photographs and other memorabilia for reproduction in this book.

Handsome book, midnight blue boards with gold gilt title impressed on spine, in multi colored flower power photographic jacket . 292 pages , with index, 3 appendices & bibliography; illustrated with B&W photographs throughout . This fascinating book follows the exploits of a generation of musicians . from Vancouver to Halifax . kids who started out playing high-school dances and local coffee houses . and who were drawn to the musical mecca of the Yorkville district of Toronto . Like Haight-Ashbury and Greenwich Village the Yorkville district was a 60s haven for free love, and the birthplace of some fabulous music . It's where west coast cowboy Ian Tyson met small-town Ontario singer Sylvia Fricke to formIan & Sylvia; where pregnant art school dropout Joni Anderson settled after travelling from Saskatchewan for the Mariposa Festival & became Joni Mitchell; where artists mingled with hippies & bikers; where a generation of Canadians were turned on to a home grown beat. While most of the successful musicians of the era earned their success, others sought stardom by wearing Beatles wigs and adopting British sounding names; and some rode the steep trajectory to fame only to suffer a rapid drug - induced demise. This book offers an inside look at the musical breeding ground that was Canada in the swinging 60s; tracing the artistic cross-fertilization that spawned such legendary collaborations as The Lovin' Spoonful; The Mamas & The Papas; Blood, Sweat & Tears; The Ugly Ducklings, plus some equally talented but some now forgotten bands like The Mandala; The Paupers; Kensington Market & more. Based on interviews with more than 100 musicians, record producers, club owners & groupies & illustrated with memorabilia from their personal collections, this brilliantly written book by Canada's foremost music historian and journalist, brings the dawn of Canadian rock & pop music to vivid life. This book was later made into the great 'Shakin' All Over', a CBC two-part television documentary. This book is " Before the Gold Rush - Flashbacks to the dawn of the Canadian Sound " .
