The First UK printing published by John lane in 1945.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition.Produced to war time economy standard.A little pushing to the spine tips.Some dustiness and foxing spots to the text block which very occasionally spreads on to the page edges.Light foxing spots to the end papers.The WRAPPER is complete and in VERY GOOD++ or better condition.Faded and browned to the spine.Lettering still very bright.Minor edge wear.A design for a different book title on the verso(as usually printed in war time restrictions).The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival protector.A cult classic of short story writing from the 1940's Inez Holden was admired by the likes of Graham Green and V S Pritchett.Inez Holden (21 November 1903- 30 May 1974) was a British writer and Bohemian social figure and journalist,also known for her association with George Orwell.Holden never married,but had a tumultuous romantic relationship with the author and painter Humphrey Slater during the 1940s. She was a close friend,and briefly lover,of George Orwell; as such she is treated in many biographical works on the author.Anthony Powell's memoir 'To Keep the Ball Rolling' recounts his first meeting with Orwell in 1941,in which Holden played a part.He refers to her as 'a torrential talker, an accomplished mimic. excellent company'.This book (in any condition) is hard to find and at the time of listing is the only available copy on the market. ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.
