You probably already know that not all top students necessarily do well after leaving school. If you excelled in school, you might have experienced firsthand that what made you successful in the classroom loses much of its value at work. If you didn't quite make the honor roll, you certainly already know that it doesn't really matter. Perfect grades in school don't necessarily guarantee that you will have the same level of success afterward. It's not uncommon at all for an average student to outperform a top student in society.
Why doesn't doing well in school automatically mean you'll do well afterward? First, the way you are "graded" at work is determined differently. At school, your grades are determined by exams, which can measure your knowledge quite accurately. However, it's virtually impossible to use anything like an exam to measure your performance at work.
Instead, your performance at work is measured by others' opinions of you. No matter how good you really are, unless others recognize it and think you are good, you aren't good to others. It's always possible there is a big difference between how good you truly are and how good others' opinions of you are.
Second, there is a fundamental difference between your tasks at school and at work. Most school exams are designed to have correct answers. If you are a top student, you can be quite sure of your answers when taking exams. However, because most of the tasks at work will be new to you, the correct answers are often debatable. Rarely can you be 100 percent sure that you are doing the right thing, and that you'll achieve the expected results, even if you possess plenty of knowledge. As a result, if you have to be sure of everything in order to act confidently and decisively, you may not perform your best and be your best.
Therefore, your knowledge won't automatically increase your value, unless you use the knowledge effectively and translate it into actions and results. There is no way that people can see exactly what is inside everyone else. If you don't appear to be good at what you do, it is almost a certainty that others won't think you are either.
This also means that it's important to know how people judge and form their opinions of one another. This will allow you to work more productively, and people will therefore be more likely to regard you highly. You need to know the rules in order to play the game.
The mind is an amazing thing. Although we may think we know how it works, it actually operates according to certain underlying principles that many people may not really know. Be sure that you attain the knowledge so that you can perform successfully in your career and be the best you can be in life.
