What did you like best about this book?
Of the 24 Life Stories entries that I read, this was one of the best. At 17, Kevin Garrison lost his foot to cancer. He chronicles the events leading up to his loss, his recuperation and adoption of a prosthetic foot, and his developing interest in the field of prosthetics, which eventually led to his becoming a certified prosthetist. The author calls it" my story of survival." He writes, "I learned not to focus on everything I couldn't do but instead I chose to focus on everything I could do." This book is a story of life, of true feelings, triumphs, setbacks, and positive choices. The narrative flows smoothly. Mr. Garrison has a fine sense of pacing, and he includes a wealth of very interesting detail about the rehabilitation process, his work and life activities, the field of prosthetics, and his honest feelings. I think this book would make worthwhile and enjoyable reading for anyone and particularly for someone who has or faces a disability and for that person's family and friends, as well as for "clinicians, educators, and students" as another reviewer on the back cover recommends.
How can the author improve this book?
I don't have any suggestions for improving this book. I hope Mr. Garrison is able to market it widely. He might also consider seeking to publish excerpts in periodicals.
Vom Autor: This is my true story written by an Amputee-Certified Prosthetist. I wrote down my story after 32 years of life, experiencing living my life as an amputee, and 24 years as a certified prosthetist. The ordeal started for me when I was 16 years old. I had very, very little help with the adjustment or life changes that were forced upon me as I became an amputee. There was no support group available for me to attend, and I was never referred for psychological counseling at all. I found it most interesting and you may agree, that I actually wrote my book to help myself! Yes, I wished someone could have handed me this book and said, "Read this son, it will help you!", at the time when I found myself having the saddest feeling that I had ever experienced before, in my new life, as an amputee. My true story as I wrote it all down, chronicles my struggle with the unbelievable harshness that life can bring to us at times. In various editorial book reviews my book has been found to be very helpful to the professionals who provide care for people with disabilities, deepening their understanding of the disabled person and the disabled persons adjustment to life after disability occurs.
