Each volume bound in green cloth with blind stamped designs & gilt lettering on spine, with BINDING TIGHT AND PAGES INTACT, in mylar covers. All volumes have a bookplate on inside cover for 'Samuel Vaughan Merrick'. Occasional foxing (mostly on prelims), pages have slight age darkening. Vol. I - 1845, 390pp, 1/3 of spine covering absent, back cover detached. Vol. II - 1845, 388pp, chips to top of spine covering, hinges cracked. Vol. III - 1846, 527pp, top edge of spine covering absent, hinges cracked. SAMUEL VAUGHAN MERRICK established Southwark iron-foundry in Pennsylvania in 1835, built the iron lighthouses that were erected along the Florida reefs, manufactured machinery for U.S. ships, active in introducing illuminating gas into Philadelphia and more.
