It s All About People, a product of AACTE s SSG (Special Study Group) on Women in the Deanship, features real-life case studies of actual incidents involving human interactions in higher education settings, contributed by women deans from public and private, research and comprehensive, rural and urban institutions. As an excellent text supplement for university educational leadership programs or professional development workshops/programs, It s All About People is a useful guide for current or aspiring deans but the guidance it offers is also helpful to provosts and other university leaders.

The book s case study approach provides practical, easily understood approaches to challenging situations faced by academic leaders. Each case details an encounter between a dean and upper administration personnel, students, faculty, staff, development officers, or community members. Each asks the question What should I do? and fellow deans respond, offering people-management strategies and lessons from their own experiences as possible solutions. Their incisive feedback is presented in an informal style, resembling the advice one might receive from a colleague over lunch or after a telephone plea for help. They provide relevant perspectives and fresh approaches to the challenges women leaders face as they engage and interact with others from positions of authority, and suggest a variety of ways in which a case incident might be successfully handled. Each case and its responses demonstrate that, in higher education leadership, it s all about people!

Über den Autor: Dee Hopkins is the dean of the College of Education at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. With over twenty years in higher education, she has held teaching and administrative posts in Wyoming, South Dakota and Texas. A former chair of the Women in the Deanship Special Study Group, her personal research focus is leadership, related specifically to deans, and her chapter, To Dean or not to Dean: Personal and Professional Considerations, appears in Dean s Balancing Acts: Education Leaders and the Challenges They Face.

Sharon E. Lovell is Associate Dean of the College of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University in Virginia. During her seventeen years in higher education she has held multiple faculty and administrative positions. The secretary of the Women in the Deanship Special Study Group, her scholarship is focused on leadership development. She is co-facilitator of a year-long intensive leadership development program for university administrators. She also offers an annual leadership academy to leaders in health and human service organizations.

Sandra B. Damico has been the dean of the College of Education at the University of Iowa since 1999. Prior to that she held faculty and administrative positions at the University of Florida and Emory University. She is a former chair of the Women in the Deanship Special Study Group. Since assuming her current position she has shifted her research to focus on higher education leadership, especially the roles played by deans. An outgrowth of this research has been a series of workshops for faculty considering moving into administration, research presentations, and journal publications.
