Inhaltsangabe: Resourcing New Testament Studies includes fifteen essays, contributed by twenty, internationally known scholars, including representatives from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. These colleagues joined together to honor David Laird Dungan, Emeritus Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, whose impressive teaching, research, and publishing career has now spanned over four decades.
Opening ?Part I. In Honor of David L. Dungan,' is a lively and revealing ?Cooperative Essay on a Collaborative Scholar,' composed by five of Dungan's colleagues; three, from the University of Tennessee; a fourth, from the editorial team with Dungan for The International Bible Commentary; and the fifth, Dungan's friend from childhood and co-author of their popular Sourcebook for the Study of the Gospels. Part I concludes with a full bibliography of Dungan's published work. Subsequent Parts of the volume focus on three themes, each reflecting some aspect of Dungan's own work, ?Part II. The Synoptic Problem;' ?Part III. Jesus, the Gospels and Acts' and ?Part IV. Canon, Theology and Ethics.'
Contributors to this Festschrift include David R. Cartlidge, Robert A. Derrenbacker, Jr., William R. Farmer, David Noel Freedman with Henry Innes MacAdam, Albert Fuchs, Birger Gerhardsson, Jan Lambrecht, Adrian Leske, David E. Linge, Sean McEvenue, Ralph V. Norman, Samuel Oyin Obogunrin, Charles H. Reynolds, Hans-Hartmut Schroeder, Joseph B. Tyson, William O. Walker, Jr., and the three co-editors, Allan J. McNicol, David B. Peabody and J. Samuel Subramanian.
David Dungan was a remarkable scholar, author and person. One rarely meets a
person with so many unusual and delightful traits. The son of Presbyterian missionaries
to China, David's international and intercultural interests came naturally. But
his curious mind, which ranged over history and nature, philosophy, technology
and pop culture, constantly surprised us. When we worked together on volumes, it
was he who mastered word processing and language fonts for print ready text. His
network of contacts, colleagues, friends and former students was astounding. He
challenged us to think in new ways, not just about gospel studies, but about the
history of the church and the impact of faith beyond the printed word. This volume is,
thus, a bittersweet testament to a cherished friend, teacher, mentor, even provocateur
at times, who leaves a rich legacy and challenges us all to move forward.
-- Lamar Cope, Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies and Former Chair of the
Department of Religious Studies, Carroll College, Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Some of the most difficult advances to be won in scholarship involve questioning
those assumptions and beliefs that all regard as the 'assured results of research'. It was
to this Herculean labour that David Laird Dungan dedicated his long and productive
career, first publishing on the sayings of Jesus quoted by Paul, and then, in numerous
articles, edited volumes, and an outstanding historical monograph, A History of
the Synoptic Problem (Doubleday, 1999), probing tirelessly the relationships among
the Synoptic Gospels. Perhaps his greatest legacy is to have pushed colleagues to
reexamine the fundamental question, How do we know what we think we know?
-- John S. Kloppenborg, Professor and Chair, Department and
Centre for the Study of Religion, University of Toronto.
