PERRAULT, Charles (1628-1703) - Alexander ANDERSON, illustrator (1775-1870). Tales of Passed Times by Mother Goose, with morals . Englished by R[obert] S[amber],Gent._______________ London: printed for T. Boosey, N* 4 Old Broad Street, Royal Exchange, and sold by all otherbooksellers, [1795-]1796.____________________ 8vo,17,5 x 10 cm. Collation : 1 - 96, 109-227 (1). (LACKS gathering 'J' due to a binder's fault ) Engraved frontispiece and 8 full-page engravings by Alexander Anderson, printed by John Burger. Original, gilt decorated, full tree calf binding. Lightly rubbed. Small piece from corner of M1 torn with loss of a word. French Title page to the Adroite princesse torn at bottom with part loss to imprint. Last three leaves carelessly opened with slight tearing to blank outer margin (no loss). Some soiling but a good copy.-------------------------------------- The first illustrated collection of Perrault¿s fairy tales printed in America, with illustrations by the United states¿ first professional book illustrator. --------------------Despite its London imprint, this work is actually the second issue of a work printed in New York by James Rivington who imported the sheets in small numbers to England in 1795. The sheets were then sold by Thomas Boosey with a new Title page, with a London imprint. With the exception of the title page, this issue is identical with that described by D'Alte Welch in his Bibliography of American Children's Books printed prior to 1821 .-------------------------------------------- Alexander Anderson is considered to be America's first professional book illustrator and this series of prints are amongst his earliest productions and were only used for this publication. --------------------------------------- ESTC records six other examples of the present London / Boosey issue : The British Library, Nottingham University, Torun University, Poland, Harvard, Princeton and Yale (lacking one plate and one leaf of text).------------------- As noted above, our copy was bound originally without gathering 'J' (pages 97- 108) due to a bookbinder's mistake. However, all 9 of Anderson's illustrations are present. The Oppenheimer copy of this book (With faults) made £3,500 in auction in 2007. RARE. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 000010
