Beschreibung:
Kafka, Franz. DIE VERWANDLUNG [The Metamorphosis]. Leipzig; Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1915. First edition. 8vo., 73 pp + 5 pp of advertisements at rear. Original buff pictorial outer wrapper printed in red and black on the upper cover with Ottomar Starkes famous illustration of a man recoiling in horror; the outer wrapper over plain red paper covers. An essentially near fine, excellent copy showing minimal use of this Kafka masterpiece often cited as one of the seminal works of short fiction of the 20th century and one of the most frequently analyzed. One fingerprint sized spot of soiling at the lower front edge of the first few pages otherwise contents clean & unblemished. The work was completed by Kafka in 1912 and published by Wolff, November 1915, band 22-23 [double issue] - the cover shows 1916 as a "Cover Date" as called for with band 22-23 clearly identified. Die Verwandlung first appeared in German in the Berlin journal, Die Weissen Blatter, 10-12 [1915]. A second edition was published by Wolff in 1918. "Als Gregor Samsa eines Morgens aus unruhigen Träumen erwachte, fand er sich in seinem Bett zu einem ungeheueren Ungeziefer verwandelt." "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic vermin." Kafka's vision of humanity's absurd relationship with the universe, the psychological, social, political, and metaphysical instability and confusion that defy logical explanation have inspired the term "Kafkaesque". In Kafka: A Writers Life, Joachim Unseld estimated that no more than 1000 copies were originally published by Wolff which sold out quickly. The wrappers format was well read and subject to wear easily making fine collectible copies very uncommon. The English language edition didn't appear until 1937. A superior example of this important work normally found quite worn if found at all. Custom Clamshell case. Buchnummer des Verkäufers

Buchbeschreibung: SHocken Books Inc, New York, 1971. Soft Cover-Couverture Souple. Buchzustand: Good - Bonne. 5th Printing/5ieme Impression. Born and brought up in Prague at a time when Czechoslovakia was trying to come to terms with the modernism of the surrounding world, It tells the tale of Gregor Samsa, a young traveling salesman who lives with his father and sister. He wakes up to find he has changed into a beetle, and cannot move easily or communicate with his family, who consequently turn their back on Samsa. Die Verwandlung [The Metamorphosis]
Buchbeschreibung: Leipzig Kurt Wolff, 1915. First Edition KAFKA, Franz. Die Verwandlung [The Metamorphosis]. Leipzig: Kurt Wolff, [1915]. First edition. Octavo (8 1/8 x 5 inches; 208 x 128 mm). [1]-72-[73], [1, blank], [5, ads], [1, blank] pp. Publishers quarter parchment over printed blue boards with publishers emblem in the middle. Front cover and spine lettered in black. Top edges blue. Top edge of boards, slightly darkened. Spine with a bit of rubbing. Previous owner's ink signature dated 1916 inside ruled border on title-page. Housed in a full cloth clamshell, with tan morocco spine labels. Overall a very good copy. "Written between November 17 and December 7, 1912 during the fit of creative passion that also saw the birth of Das Urteil [The Judgement] and the first chapter of Der Verschollen (Der Heizer) [(The Stoker)].This exceptionally repulsive story is the most sustained work of fiction published during Kafkas lifetime and the one with which his name is most profoundly associated in the common consciousness: it is the story of Gregor Samsas transformation into a giant insect. The strange allegory of alienationfrom the self, from ones very body, from the family, and by analogy from society, the state and the whole of mankindis one of the defining works of the twentieth-century consciousness. In his critical hierarchy of the great prose works of the Twentieth Century, Vladimir Nabokov rates Die Verwandlung second behind only James Joyces Ulysses" (The Breon Mitchell Collection of the Works of Franz Kafka, p. 7). Die Verwandlung [Metamorphosis].
Buchbeschreibung: Kurt Wolff Verlag, Leipzig, 1915, 1915. Octavo. Original japon backed blue paper boards, titles to upper board and spine in black, top edge stained blue. With the censor's small rubber stamp to the title page as often. Boards a little tanned but an excellent copy. First edition, first printing, the uncommon case-bound issue. The publication of this work - the first of Kafka's masterpieces was a rather confused affair. Two basic issues were intended, one in wrappers the other bound in boards. Sales seem not to have been good and after a year or so numerous copies remaining unsold were stamped on the title pages with the official stamp of the German censors. Possibly at this time a second - cheaper looking binding was put out with wove paper and poorer stamping to the boards and spine. Unquestionably one of the most influential works of fiction produced in the 20th century - a nightmare in prose. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 35113
Die Verwandlung (Metamorphosis)

Buchbeschreibung: Leipzig: Kurt Wolff, (1915). First German edition, first printing. 8vo. Appears rebound in full buff cloth with the title in gilt on a leather label on the spine. With marbleized endpapers. Originally published with a cover featuring an illustration by Ottomar Starke. [1]-72-[73], [1, blank], [5, pub. ads], [1, blank] pp. This book was part of a vast collection of German language books owned by one Georg Hirschfeld. I believe the owner to be the German realist writer Georg Hirschfeld (1873-1942) most widely known as the author of Die Mütter (1896). Many of the books (although not this one) bear an armorial bookplate and a signature, images of which can be furnished upon request. This copy is in very-good plus condition with some illegible [to me!] writing in pen to the titlepage right above the triple-lined border decoration. There are no other markings or writing within the book. The binding is strong and tight with some light wear/toning to the cover cloth as well as the leather title label. The interior pages are mostly clean with some light spotting/toning in a few places. Overall, a very attractive copy of the true first edition of this modern masterpiece by Kafka. DIE VERWANDLUNG [THE METAMORPHOSIS]
Buchbeschreibung: Leipzig; Kurt Wolff Verlag, 1915. First edition. Original buff pictorial wrappers, titled on the upper cover in red and black, over olive paper covers. 5pp of adverts to rear. A very good copy indeed, which has minor wear to the spine ends and a small mark to the upper cover, but is generally clean and crisp. Internally extremely clean and fresh. A very well preserved copy of this notoriously fragile item. Born and brought up in Prague at a time when Czechoslovakia was trying to come to terms with the modernism of the surrounding world, Kafka was the son of a loud, robust, bourgeois father. This relationship was an uneasy one for the thin, academic and often awkward Kafka, and paternal themes permeate a lot of Kafka's work particularly this, his most famous work. It tells the tale of Gregor Samsa, a young traveling salesman who lives with his father and sister. He wakes up to find he has changed into a beetle, and cannot move easily or communicate with his family, who consequently turn their back on Samsa. Partly autobiographical in an allegorical sense, it expresses Kafka's uneasy relationship with his family and is a reaction to a bourgeois and materialistic society in which the intellectual is regarded as 'vermin' to be restricted and crushed by economic and social demands. Die Verwandlung was the second of Kafka's works to appear in Kurt Wolff's series 'Der Jüngste Tag'. Unseld estimates the initial print run was no more than 1000 copies which quickly sold and the book was reprinted in 1918. An English translation appeared in 1937. Its perceptions make it one of the most significant works in the development of twentieth century consciousness. Vladimir Nabokov, who ranked The Metamorphosis second only to Ulysses in his critique of twentieth century prose, described Kafka as, "the greatest German writer of our time. Such poets as Rilke or such novelists as Thomas Mann are dwarfs or plaster saints in comparison to him." Unseld p 374. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 14474
