Buchbeschreibung: Bertochus, Reggio, 1502. Calepino, Ambrogio (1440-1510/11). Ambrosii Calepini bergomatis eremitani dictionarium. Folio. [444]ff. Rhegii Lingobardiae [Reggio]: Dionysius Bertochus, 1502 (colophon). 312 x 208 mm. 19th century half calf, paste paper boards, rubbed, corners worn. First and last leaves remargined, marginal repairs to a number of other leaves, minor worming and staining, but on the whole a good copy. Letter tabs added by an early owner. Sheet with former owner’s notes tipped to inside front cover; notes in another hand on front free endpaper.Rare First Edition of the most successful and widely reprinted reference book of the early modern period, which went through an astonishing 166 editions in the sixteenth century, followed by 32 in the seventeenth and 13 in the eighteenth. Calepino, an Augustinian monk, "devoted some thirty years to composing his dictionary, which focused on classical Latin usage and on encyclopedic information and literary examples from ancient culture. In the years after his death many, mostly anonymous editors made modifications, corrections, and especially additions, often borrowing from other dictionaries . . . In the early modern period the Calepino not only became the most widely recognized brand of dictionary, still active in the early twentieth century, but it also came to stand for the entire dictionary genre . . . At the same time the success of the Calepino solidified the association of the title ‘dictionarium’ with the dictionary genre—only a few major dictionaries were called by another title" (Blair, Too Much to Know: Managing Scholarly Information before the Modern Age [2010], p. 122).The Dictionarium’s enormous success as a reference work meant that copies were "read to death"; also, the many revisions that the work underwent during its long publishing history—particularly the addition of vernacular translations beginning in the mid-sixteenth century—suggests that the earlier editions might not have been retained in scholarly libraries. The first edition of the Dictionarium is now quite rare: OCLC and the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalogue cite 11 copies in libraries, only one of which (the Indiana State University copy) is in the United States. Our copy shows signs of heavy use, but it is complete. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 42764

Fioriture e gorette marginali. Primo e ultimo fascicolo abilmente lavati. Beautiful xylographic title-page from Paganino's press. Text on two columns. Some small light waterstains and foxing. First and last quire accurately washed, a well preserved copy in Seventeenth Century calf binding, lacks original clasps, a small restoration at spine (title on spine with modern manuscript label). Buchbeschreibung: Valentin Curio September 1530, Basel, 1530. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Very Good. First Valentin Curio Edition. Contemporary blind-tooled pigskin over heavy oak boards, edges tinted a rich black; thick folio; title-p., + 442 leaves (the last misnumbered "444"). Printed in Greek and Latin, the latter in small cursive type, in 2 columns; historiated woodcut initials in the text; printer's device on title and (a different one) on last leaf. Rather rubbed, lacking the two clasps, but solid. Overall, a very good copy, complete, and certainly put to much use, with a interesting manuscript annotations (see conclusion) and provenance: "Sum Jacobi Wazeneggeri Brigantini" (Bregenz, Austria) in a 17th or 18th-century hand on the flyleaf and, underneath this, the library stamp "Franziskanerkloster Bibliothek Pfreimd. On the title-p., "Sum ex familia Thome Celsi Bregantini 1568," along with the same Franciscan library stamp, and two excised ownership entries. Bookplate roughly removed from front paste-down. Title-leaf partly backed to fill the spaces left by the two excised names (nowhere infringing upon text); a tear in f. a2 somewhat clumsily repaired at an early date (again, no loss of text); a few wormholes, finger smudges, and ink stains; dampstain on f. 175-80 and the last few leaves; a few of the manuscript annotations in the extreme outer margins cropped a little by the binder. The first Valentin Curio edition. Altogether 14 editions of Calepino were produced at this press between 1530-1562. In the preface, Valentin states that eliminating the errors and contaminations which had crept into the previous editions was comparable to Hercules' cleaning of the Augean stables. Labarre no. 45; Rodgers 154 (p. 5 of I. McMorland's catalogue, 1995); not in BM/STC Germ., nor Adams. This copy is remarkable for its tidy manuscript annotations, by a contemporary reader, offering precise information which complements the printed entries. Where Calepino indicates his sources, for example, he generally contents himself by giving the name of the author where the word occurs (Horace, Virgil, Ovid, etc.); our reader/annotator adds details such as the title and place, sometimes even a line or page reference. Buchbeschreibung: Alessando Paganino, Toscolano, 1522. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Very Good. 4to (220 x 148mm). 381pp., (mispaginated as common, 2C misbound). Title within woodcut interlace border. Two woodcut initials for dedication and letter ‘A’ with scrolling vinework. Double columns of Italic type. Later blue wrappers, ms. title to spine, cancelled period inscription on front wrap; (title browned and brittle at upper hinge and margin, lightly dampstained throughout mostly at front and rear, edges lightly worn.) Early ownership inscription to title. 1522 edition of Calepinus’ Latin dictionary, first appearing in Reggio in 1502, nine years before his death. The first edition was faulty in its deficiency of good words and abundance of unauthorized ones, in its errors of citations and confused meanings. It was reprinted many times during the 16th century; the Aldine press alone produced no fewer than 18 editions from 1542 to 1592. Later editions were considerably enlarged and by the mid 1580s the Latin original had added equivalents in eleven other languages. Calepinus, an Italian monk and philologist, devoted himself to letters and his name became almost synonymous with Latin lexicons during this 16th century. His polyglot dictionary was a helpful source for Latin phrases and figures of speech in philosophy and theology. Calepinus’ dictionary remains one of the most popular humanist dictionaries of the period; tracing words back to their Greek and Latin roots as well as noting the specific passages in the primary source material. This work, as noted in the title, incorporated the contents of the Cornucopia of Nicholas Perotti (1458). Notably, Calepinus includes proper names in his descriptions and details the histories and legends associated with them. Calepinus’ dictionary was also more orthodox than its predecessors in its alphabetical arrangement and additions of more quotations from Christian works. It is noteworthy that the 1752 edition was used in the seminary of Patavia and was intended for theological studies. Well-preserved, important dictionary, chock-full of encyclopedic material for the Renaissance student. Buchnummer des Verkäufers D6218

Ambrogio Calepino, commonly known by the Latin form of his name, Calepinus, which later became nearly synonymous with dictionaries (A ‘calepin’ was a dictionary, often pocket-sized). Calepinus was an Italian lexicographer from Bergamo who entered the Augustinian Order in 1458. His dictionary was first printed in 1502 exclusively as a Latin edition. Subsequent editions were enlarged to include other languages and by the 1580s following editions contained eleven languages, including as named on the title page; Greek, Latin, Hebrew, French Italian, German, and Spanish.
