Reprinted 1981 with additional Preface. Hardback. xv, 241pp. Dust jacket in a protective sleeve. Lords and Ladies (Arum maculatum), also known asBloody-man's-finger, Ozberry, Snake's-victuals, Priesties, Cocky-baby, Dog's-dibble and about a hundred other rustic aliases must be one of our most eccentric wild flowers. It has a bizarre but attractive appearance, a highly complex structure, a foul smell, poisonous properties and an elaborate if sinister method of pollination. In the past, this arum has provided food for starving garrisons, a cure for gout, a medical aphrodisiac of dubious value, a stiffener for Elizabethan ruffs and an indifferent substitute for soap. Dr Prime was a senior biology master and his work on this plant is a model of what might be achieved by a busy man when he concentrates upon his investigations. This book is the culmination of many years of study and offers that joyful combination of learning and entertainment. The book is illustrated with a variety of photographs and drawings. Colour forntispiece, 6 photographs in black & white together with line drawings and diagrams. Book in near fine condition and appears very little used. Dust jacket very good and unclipped. A little light edge wear with some rubbing to extremities of spine and some small nicks to corners. Spine a little discoloured and jacket generally lightly soiled. Book.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Clifford and Rosemary Ellis (illustrator). First edition. A beautifully presented collection of first editions from the New Naturalist series, in the original, striking dust wrappers. First editions, in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original dust wrappers. A very smart collection of five editions by The New Naturalists, a series of books published by Collins covering a variety of natural history topics relevant to The British Isles. The aim of this series was "To interest the general reader in the wild life of Britain by recapturing the inquiring spirit of the old naturalists.". This particular collection is comprised of 'The Badger' (1948) by Ernest Neal, 'The Redstart' (1950) by John Buxton, The Herring Gull's World' (1953 by Nico Tinbergen, 'Lords & Ladies' (1960) by Cecil T. Prime and 'The Wood Pigeon' (1965) by R. K. Murton. These works are filled with illustrations, with twenty-four in 'The Badger', nineteen in 'The Redstart', fifty-one in 'The Herring Gull's World', six in 'Lords & Ladies' and sixteen in 'The Wood Pigeon', as well as a colour frontispiece to most volumes and numerous text figures and vignettes throughout. Collated, complete. With beautifully decorative dust wrappers, designed by husband and wife printmaking and artistic duo, Clifford and Rosemary Ellis. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original dust wrappers. Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities and to the spine, with a touch of fading in places. Light offsetting and the odd mark to endpapers. Dust wrappers in very good condition, with light edgewear, moreso the The Badger. All wraps have been price clipped, with the exception of The Redstart. Light sunning to the wraps with the odd mark. The occasional spot to the Herring Gull wrap, mainly to the reverse. Tape to the reverse of The Badger. Ink inscription to the front endpaper of Herring Gull. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Charming badger stamp added to title page of The Badger. Very Good Indeed. book.
