Soft cover. Zustand: Good. This is apparently the early, 1910, reprint of Dodge's book first printed two years earlier. Printed brown wraps. 1781pp. Photographic plates of scenes/locations and persons. Between the front cover & the blank ffep is a printed and bound-in slip, "Compliments of General Grenville M. Dodge." On the ffep is handwritten in ink, "To Robt. D. Johnston RMC." Written in pencil above the cover title is "Capt. R. McCaffree (although McCaffree may not be quite right). Lower down is in pencil, "George." This copy good or better with a couple of repairs to the spine. Front cover corners chipped back in half-inch triangles; crease to corner on back cover. There is no reference to a publisher or date which is why we believe this is the 1910 printing. Good. Howes "Final Edition" D403.

1st. First Edition, INSCRIBED by the author, with compliments, to Frank Earle Hayward. 8vo. 95 pp. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering to front cover; original front cover of wrappers with Dodge's inscription bound in at rear. One ink correction in text in same color of ink as the inscription so quite possibly in Dodge's hand. Three bookplates of Frank Earle Hayward else a near fine copy. Uncommon collection of 16 speeches by Major Dodge covering a range of subjects including the Battle of Atlanta, Execution of Confederate spy Sam'l Davis, on 'water cure,' joining of tracks of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railways, the beginnings of Omaha and Nebraska and more. Grenville Mellen Dodge (1831-1916) was a Union army officer on the frontier and pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence Chief in the Western Theater. He later served as a U.S. Congressman, businessman, and railroad executive who helped direct the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Historian Stanley P. Hirshon suggested that Dodge, "by virtue of the range of his abilities and activities," could be considered "more important in the national life after the Civil War than his more famous colleagues and friends, Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan." - wiki.
