Buch Erstausgabe
Stapled Soft Cover. Zustand: Very Good +. First Edition. Privately printed, 1967. 19pp. From Wikipedia: The "Battle of Fort Fizzle" (also called the Holmes County Draft Riots and the Holmes County Rebellion) was a skirmish that took place during the American Civil War in the village of Glenmont (then known as Napoleon) in Holmes County, Ohio, between Union troops and local draft resisters opposed to the Conscription Act of 1863.Adopted by Congress on March 13, 1863, the Conscription Act authorized President Abraham Lincoln to draft men into military service in states that did not meet their volunteer quotas. When Federal officials tried to enforce the act in Holmes County in June, about 900 to 1000 locals built a makeshift fort, equipped with four artillery pieces, to prevent the act's enforcement. After a brief encounter in which two resisters were wounded, Ohio Governor David Todd ordered a force of nearly 420 Union troops, including the 3rd Ohio Infantry, to disperse the resisters, giving the place the name "Fort Fizzle" because the rebellion had "fizzled out". The episode ended when the last four resisters who had assaulted a Federal draft official turned themselves in. Forty-three men from the Napoleon area were indicted for assaulting an officer and preventing the execution of law (US Military Conscription Act of 1863). The armed men involved in the prisoner rescue were indicted for treason. An additional 37 men were indicted for their involvement in activities in other parts of Holmes County, and in nearby Knox and Coshocton counties. Of the 80 men involved in these activities the cases of just two men went to trial. Only one man, Laurant Blanchat (also known as Blanchard) was found guilty. Sentenced to six months at hard labor at the Ohio Penitentiary, Blanchat was pardoned by President Lincoln prior to the completion of the sentence. The prosecution of every other case was eventually dropped. Limited edition of 100 copies. As new condition. A very nice piece of local ephemera.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. No Jacket. First Edition. This is an interesting book with 56 pages of text, footnotes and an index. Pages 57-58 are blank and for use in taking notes. D. W. Garber was from Ohio and he and his wife Vera relocated to Stockton to be near their daughter whose husband had passed away unexpectedly. There are three brief chapters that made up this booklet. 1. Jedediah Strong Smith: At Home in Ohio. 2. Jedediah Strong Smith, Patrick Gass and Doctor Titus Gordon Vespasian Simons. 3. Jedediah Strong Smith, Johnny Appleseed and Tyllertown. 4. Jedediah Strong Smith: A Miscellany of Information. Mr. Garber loved history and he was recognized as a local historian who wrote many many articles for local newspapers and he was the author of several books. He himself had a wonderful collection of books and articles that he found in his 60 year as a local writer. He made a career in the Navy, enlisting in World War I. He was on active duty for over 20 years and was recalled to active duty with the outbreak of WWII. His was involved in recruiting at that time. He was a mentor to several people who loved history and who loved to write, some of whom continue to write today. There are only two copies of this book currently on line and they were going for 35-40 dollars. These are priced to sell.
