The author was a Jesuit missionary among the Iroquois at Sault St. Louis. "An extraordinary summation of seventeenth century knowledge of the life and society of the American Indian. One plate with a tear in lower margin(no loss). A faint brownspot to lower inner margins, not affecting text or image of plates. A faint brownspot to margin of title. Scarce second Dutch edition of Lafitau's famous description of the American Indians, "Moeurs des sauvages ameriquains.", first published 1724. "A grand cyclopaedia of Indian history, and the customs at that date" (Field no. 851). This is a main work on the natives of America, mainly North America and Canada. It is a first-hand description of the ethnology, etnography and antropology of the Indians, as Lafitau was a Jesuit missionary in Canada staying there for 6 years (1712-17), where he was based among the Iroquois at Sault Saint-Louis."There are few clues as to how Lafitau gathered information from his Indian subjects; he names no sources among them. Rather his interests ran to topics, and his scientific bent was soon directed not only to discovery but also to publication. He afterward wrote that five of his six years in Canada were spent among the Indians, that he read the Relations of previous missionaries, and that he was not content simply to know the practices of the Indians but wanted to erect a science of customs by comparing their manners with those of the peoples of antiquity. He was a keen observer himself, and his writing is salted with penetrating insights which combine theory and verification."(Dictionary of Canadian Biography).Lafitau is of special interest today to historians of anthropology. What sets him apart from his immediate predecessors and contemporaries is, indeed, his explicit formulation of a method for recovering the past; without reference to dates, places, or persons, and putting himself outside of events, he uses his observations in America by a kind of evolutionary inference to illuminate the customs and practices of antiquity."(Dictionary of Canadian Biography)."Gives very extended and very exact details of the customs, manners, and religion of the savages of America, though principally of the Indians of Canada."(Sabin: 38598 The 1731 edition, not the 1751-edition). Titles in red and black with engraved vignettes. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece, a map, and 41 plates. First Dutch Edition of a key work on Native American peoples. Lafitau was assigned as a Jesuit missionary to Canada from 1711-1718 and was based for much of that period among the Iroquois at Sault Saint-Louis. First Edition of the Dutch Translation, "one of the most beautiful editions of Lafitaus work." (Lande) One of the earliest, most detailed and accurate first-hand accounts of the religious, political and domestic culture of the Iroquois and Huron Indians and a pioneering work in empirical ethnology. Lafitau discovered matriliny and outlined the classification kinship system of the Iroquois which Morgan, who had not read Lafitau, was to rediscover a century later. (See DCB) It was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that full recognition of his contribution to comparative ethnology was accorded. Lafitau's observations were gathered during a long residence among the Iroquois. A Jesuit missionary, he came to Quebec in 1711 and served at the Iroquois mission of Sault Saint-Louis from 1712 to 1717. "We have nothing so exact upon the subject of which he treats. His parallel of ancient nations with the American Indians is very ingenious, and exhibits as great familiarity with the nations of antiquity in the old world, as with the aborigines of the new."
