Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Hardcover. 339 pages + 8 pages of ads. Bound in brown cloth with gold border, decorative gold lettering on the spine. Boards are worn and faded. Corners bumped, cloth faded. Back cover separated from rear endpaper, but still attached to spine and front cover. Text block still in one piece, but a few cracks at the gutter require careful handling. A single leaf (121/122) detached and set back in place. This copy has the ownership name of Henry van der Weyde on the first blank page. There is another line written in pencil beneath which I cannot make out. Below that, the word Captain has been crossed out, and below that the word Br. Major written. There is a bit of glue residue beneath the writing, is if something were once pasted in but is now missing. There is another ownership name (or perhaps the same one) on the brown front endpaper -- entirely unintelligible to me. There are two wonderful notations in the margins of the book. The first is during the account of the Battle of Fredericksburg where reference is made to General Newton's Division, van der Weyde has written 'Mine' in the margin. A few pages later, during the account of the morning of Dec 15th, van der Weyde has written 'I saw them there' beside a description of picket posts playing cards. And he's written 'an idiot' next to a mention of Gen Burnside on the same page. Henry van der Weyde left the US after the war and set up shop as a photographer in London, where his body of work was significant. A wonderful and scarce bit of Civil War history, with first hand notes.
