Hardcover first edition - First edition. The second of Odum's three classic works on African American music. As noted in the preface, the songs in this volume were collected in northern Mississippi and northern Georgia, with a few other songs and fragments from North Carolina and Tennessee included for comparative purposes. They are divided into three categories: religious songs (the largest group), social songs, and work songs. Much of the book consists of the lyrics to the songs. Includes a select bibliography, and an index to the songs. vii, 306 pp. Ex-library with the usual markings, but overall a good copy, tight and sturdy in very dark blue cloth with gilt lettering (corners bumped, a bit of wear to the ends of the spine covering).

Hardcover. Zustand: Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No Dust Jacket. First Edition; First Printing. Black boards with gilt titles. Edge, corner and surface wear along with some sort of staining on back and at top of spine, edging onto the front. Not clear if this is an old dampstain or something else. It is unobtrusive but noticeable. It seems to have affected the last two endpapers especially with the top two corners missing. Also, the opening pages are not in proper order -- two half-title pages, last page of Preface before first two, title page after Contents. Obviously this was caused by some printing error. (I have noticed that some copies on-line also have opening problems, though not exactly the same as this one. ) These problems noted, the book is square and the binding secure. Not a real collector's copy but still a solid, useable copy with a reasonable appearance. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 306 pages; Odum wrote three early works that concentrated on African-American music. This book was the second, preceded by Folk-Beliefs of the Southern Negro and followed by Negro Workaday Songs. These books are seminal works for an understanding of the blues and other African-American music since Odum's field studies began around 1910 before most of the famous blues singers were recorded. Odum did some of the earliest field recordings in the South using equipment acquired from Edison. This is a very important work on African American and American music that is often overlooked. The book includes many lyrics.

Black clothboards with gold printing on front and spine. Corners bent; spine ends lightly tucked. Small amount of light spotting on rear board. Text block clean, tight, square, unmarked, lightly tanning. One small light streak across top edge. Overall still an attractive book. 9"x6" 278 pp of songs, analysis, index. "'Negro Workaday Songs' is the third volume of a series of folk background studies of which 'The Negro and his Songs' was the first. In this volume the emphasis is primarily social, although this indicates no lack of appreciation of the inherent literary and artistic values of the specimens presented. Indeed, so far as possible, all examples of folk expression in this volume are left to tell their own story. The melodies and musical notations are presented separately.and are not offered as a substitute for effective harmonies and musical interpretations." (from the preface).

First Edition in dustjacket from 1926 edition (and a centimeter taller than the book). "Seldom have we had the pleasure of encountering such perfect comprehension of the Negro on the part of white investigators. The beauty, pathos, and fun of the songs of the black man. In that portion of the book devoted to 'social songs' the collection is of immense value". Uncommon in dustjacket. "A foundational study of great importance both to the specialist and to the general reader. With scholarly investigation is combined intelligent sympathy and a rare understanding of the Negro in his various aspects." Near Fine in Very Good dustjacket.
