Buch
Early printing ("Fifty-third Thousand"). 18.5 x 13cm. Publisher's original illustrated stapled paper wrappers, covered with additional late nineteenth-century plain sewn wrappers with title in manuscript to the upper cover. Illustrated with three black and white wood engravings, in addition to the cover illustration. 31pp. + 1p. publisher's advertisements. A very good copy, the binding secure, the printed wrappers with some light foxing and the odd minor mark. The contents with a light vertical bend running throughout and the occasional minor mark are otherwise in good order. An uncommon tract centring on the lives of two Black British characters - 'Miss Dinah Sunflower' and 'Mr. Barnaby Whiskyfrig', "muffin and crumpet maker, and inventor of the original cough-drops, sneezing stick, and tartlets of toasted cheese" - living in "an unfashionable part of London" at the end of the nineteenth century. The story follows the changing fortunes of Dinah, a talented fiddle-player, who goes from dejection at her lot in life to a happier outlook via the efforts of a new local preacher. With Dinah ceasing to play at "low places of amusement and fiddlin'" and turning her talents to spiritual music, the highly racist work presents a 'white saviour' missionary narrative, as the two main black characters are simultaneously 'rescued' and reprimanded, whilst their own speech is written in exaggerated mock-accents. LibraryHub records only two institutional copies (Bodleian and Cambridge).
