Eight volumes containing the Diary of the naval administrator Samuel Pepys, edited by Henry B. Wheatley. With a frontispiece to volume 1. As one of the few sources providing detailed insight into the everyday life of an upper-class man during the Restoration period, the diary of Samuel Pepys has become an important primary source for historians. As well as sharing personal revelations, and every day things such as his routine, the weather, finances, and meals, Pepys also discusses contemporary events such as Plague of London and the Great Fire of London. With six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume 1. With six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume 4. With a thirty-two page catalogue of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume 6. With two pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume 7. With six pages of publisher's adverts to the rear of volume 8. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper of volume I, 'E. J. Wilson. Johnsonville 31 - 7 - 13'. Wilson has signed their name to the front endpaper of all the volumes. In the publisher's original blue cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Very lightly rubbed to the boards, a little more so to volume 1, and volumes 5 to 8. Lightly rubbed to the joints, and a little rubbed and bumped to the head and tail of the spine, with a small closed tear in the cloth to the head of volumes 1 and 8. The cloth at the spine of volume 3 is a little discoloured. internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with the occasional patch of light scattered foxing. Very Good. book.

Royal octavo. Ten volumes, uniformly bound. Large paper edition, limited to 250 copies. Bound in half vellum with buff coloured cloth; brown decorations stamped to the front board and gold gilt lettering and decorations stamped to the spine. Top edge of text block trimmed. Illustrated with black and white plates, some folding. Previous owner's bookplate to front pastedown. Rubbing along the edges and bumping to some of the corners. Abrasion to the cloth on the back board of the first volume and a small ink stain near the top edge of the back board of the fourth volume. Wear and minor soiling to the spines of the first four volumes. Mild toning to the endpapers and occasional foxing throughout. Overall, a very good and complete set. This set is #202 from a limited edition of 250 copies and contains Lord Braybrooke's notes and was also edited with additions by Henry B. Wheatley, F. S. A. An attractively bound set of this work by Pepys, who was an administrator of the navy of England and Member of Parliament; Pepys was most famous for the diary that he kept for a decade while still a relatively young man.

Uniformly bound with half calf with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart with some marks to the spines, especially to vol v and a few marks to the boards. With a bookplate for Sir William Eden, Bart to all front pastedowns. Pencil inscription to rear free endpaper of volume iv. Front hinge starting on vol iv but remains firm. Internally, all are firmly bound with bright and generally clean pages with some light scattered spots to the odd leaf. Very Good. book.
