First Edition, First Printing. The first book on James Dean written by his close friend and former roommate William Bast (1931-2015) in both New York and Hollywood. Issued largely as a paperback, this is one of the tiny number hardbound in full red cloth. The hardbound version has some text not found in the paperback version. Some stray ink marks on the rear free endpaper A little sunning to spine, some general use to the boards, else very good in an excellent facsimile dust jacket.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in black. With the photographic dust jacket (reproducing two photographs by Roy Schatt). Corners nicked and slight loss at the head of the spine and creasing on the very top of the jacket cover, but still a nice copy in the clipped spine-faded (nearly all extant copies have this) cover bright jacket with creases and tears to the extremities. Photographic portrait frontispiece by Roy Schatt. First edition, first printing; scarce hardbound edition, of James Dean's posthumous biography written (as his first book) by his close friend William Bast, who he met rehearsing for a student theatre production of Macbeth at UCLA in 1950. This is the first book-length biography of Dean to appear after his death in 1955, by a friend (and former UCLA classmate); issued simultaneously in paperback, this is the much scarcer hardcover printing.
