Buchbeschreibung: Hieronimo Frobenio Episcopio., 1563. Rilegato. Buchzustand: molto buono. prima edizione. Tradotti in lingua toscana de Michelangelo Florio. In-folio, pergamena molle coeva. (xii), 542, (10) pp., 1 tavola ripiegata f.t. "Agricola's De re metallica is one of the great monuments of technology by reason of the comprehensiveness of its text and the detail and intelligibility of his numerous illustrations. For two centuries De re metallica remained the chief texbook on mining and metallurgy." (Singer, History of technology, III, pp. 27-28; 324-34). "The magnificent woodcut illustrations. are a feature of this great work which remained unexcelled for generations. It marks the beginning of scientific method through observations as distinct from the purely scholastic approach of the Middle Ages." (Annan, Historic books on mining, p. 6 (4). "Agricola was the first author to compile a book in which technical descriptions and drawings were of sufficent accuracy and detail to enable machines to be made fromthe information supplied. Workshop, tools, machines and things relating to metals are excellenttly described and illustrated. He described multi-stage reciprocating mine-pumps which were driven by water-wheels; and horse-driven pumps, with rack-gears and chains, arranged in series to drain minesv with over 200 feet total lift. His use of anti-friction rollers for bearing is interesting" (Davison, Historic books on machines, 7). D.S.B., I, pp. 75-76. Warld & Carozzi, Geology emerging, 30 (ed.orig.). Buchbeschreibung: Jeronymus Froben u. Nicl. Bischoff, Basel, 1557. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Very Good. First printing. First printing, 1557. Large quarto (13.5 x 9 inches; 34 x 22.5 cm), original varnished and stained oak boards with remains of original brass clasps, somewhat later plain brown leather spine, pp. (8), ccccxci, (13), illustrated throughout with woodcuts, some of which are full page, including folding plate facing p. cv. A good to very good copy, light wear and rubbing to what is probably 18th C. leather spine, book is ex-library with library bookplate on pastedown (the endpapers are late 19th C. plain tanned paper), a couple faint ink stamps on title page, ink number notation to introductory page after title, no other library marks. Title page has been repaired with extensive old paper patching to its verso and has been affixed to the next page with old white cloth book tape at its gutter. First few pages with tanning and spottiness, majority of text very good and clean, but top third of foredge of text block shows darkening from old dampstain, and the upper outer margins of most pages show very faint tan tidemark going in at most one inch of that old dampstain, not very noticable, also, some minor occasional foxing; there is also some dampstain tan tidemarks, somewhat more extensive, to the last few leaves, mainly the index and colophon pages, not the text. Minor patching to upper inner margin of colophon page. The woodcuts are all free of dampstaining and are bright and well inked. A handsome copy of this classic, the first German language edition of De Re Metallica, which was published in Latin the year before in 1556. With the same woodcuts. Agricola's book was the greatest 16th C. contribution to the science of mining, mineralogy, extractive technologies, and was a major contribution to the sciences of geology and metallurgy. It was translated into English by future president Hebert Hoover in 1912. Georgius Agricola (birth name Georg Pawer) 1494- 1555 was a German scientist known as the Father of Mineralogy. Auction records establish a firm track record for this book, but the last at auction was Sotheby's 2001 for a copy with some stamps and worming and other problems, $12,000. The 1556 Latin edition auctions for $20-30K in recent years for very good copies. Buchnummer des Verkäufers C00009703

Buchbeschreibung: Basileae Helvet Sumptibus Itemque Typis Chalcographicis Ludovici Regis 1621, 1621. Third Latin Edition of this monumental work, Òthe first treatise on mining and metallurgy and one of the first technological books of modern times.Ó Illustrated profusely with a very handsome pictorially engraved title-page and 273 full or partial page engravings by Hans Rudolf Manuel Deutsch (Blasius Weffring). The final 58 pages contain a dictionary of metallurgy in Latin, Greek and German. Folio (mm. 312 x 205), handsomely bound in contemporary soft vellum, the spine with calligraphic titling in an early hand. (10), 538, (58), 4, (1) pp. A fine and handsome copy, clean and well preserved with large margins. The binding with some very old staining to one side, but not affecting the quality of the vellum or the strength or quality of the book. ONE OF THE GREATEST WORKS IN THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. (This was) Òthe first important attempt to assemble systematically in print the world-knowledge on mining, metallurgy, and industrial chemistry. It was the great textbook of those industries for two centuries and had dominated thought and practice all that time. In many mining regions and camps, including the Spanish South America it was chained to the church altar and translated by the priest to the miners between religious services.Ó H. Hoover This great and Ôsystematic treatise on mining and extractive metallurgy, is illustrated with many fine and interesting woodcuts which illustrate every conceivable process to extract ores from the ground and metal from the ore, and much more besides. Agricola described and illustrated how ore veins occur in and on the ground, making the work an early contribution to the developing science of geology. He described prospecting for ore veins and surveying in great detail, as well as washing the ores to collect the heavier valuable minerals, such as gold and tin. He acknowledged his debt to ancient authors, such as Pliny the Elder and Theophrastus. The work is also important for showing the many water mills used in mining, such as the machine for lifting men and material into and out of a mine shaft. Water mills found innumerable applications, especially in crushing ores to release the fine particles of gold and other heavy minerals, as well as working giant bellows to force air into the confined spaces of underground workings. DE RE METALLICA contains in an appendix, the German equivalents for the technical terms used in the Latin text. It long remained a standard work, and marks its author as one of the most accomplished chemists of his time. Believing the black rock of the Schlossberg at Stolpen to be the same as Pliny the Elder's basalt, he applied this name to it, and thus originated a petrological term which has been permanently incorporated in the vocabulary of science. Until that time, Pliny's work Historia Naturalis was the main source of information on metals and mining techniques, and Agricola made numerous references to the Roman encyclopedia. He described many mining methods which are now redundant, such as fire-setting, which involved building fires against hard rock faces. The hot rock was quenched with water, and the thermal shock weakened it enough for easy removal. It was very dangerous when used in underground galleries for the toxic gases given off by fires, and was made obsolete by explosives. DE RE METALLICA is considered a classic document of Renaissance metallurgy, unsurpassed for two centuries. In 1912, the Mining Magazine (London) published an English translation which was made by Herbert Hoover, a significant American mining engineer, and later, President of the United States, along with his wife Lou Henry Hoover. This translation was published in book form in a fine folio edition bound in white vellum. Added to the work for the first time was a biographical introduction, annotations, and appendices on the development of mining methods, metallurgical processes, geology, mineralogy and mining law from the earliest times to the 16th century.Õ. Buchbeschreibung: Boetius 1716-1717, Regensburg & Leipzig, 1717. FIRST EDITION. Folio. 25 ff., 184 pp.; 18 ff., 82 pp., 8 ff. Register. The two printed titles appear in red and black. With 2 engraved title-pages, 1 large folding mezzotint portrait of the author, 34 engraved plates (of which 2 are folding), 6 engravings in the text (of which 5 are large emblems). * FIRST EDITION, a rare complete copy. - "This was the first treatise on cuttings and graftings, and it made Agricola famous" (Hunt 452). Agricola's claim to have found a new method of making trees and other plants grow from cuttings in a miraculously short period of time -- "one hour" (!) -- created a sensation in the botanical world and it caused his book to be translated into Dutch, French, and English soon after it appeared. The book is important because of its truly interesting and useful observations. "Its 35 plates served as the principal illustrated fruit-tree propagation manual for many decades" (Janson, Pomona's Harvest p. 215). *** Georg Andreas Agricola was a German doctor from Regensburg whose discoveries regarding plant propagation aroused significant interest at the beginning of the eighteenth century. This is a detailed and beautifully illustrated work that details breeding of trees, bushes and other garden plants with specification of the different methods of cutting, grafting etc. Contains engraved plates of plants, garden devices, greenhouses (with heating systems!), garden plants, and much more. *** The magnificent large folding mezzotint portrait of the author (45 cm x 32 cm) was engraved by Bernhard Vogel, of Augsburg after Christoph Ludwig Agricola, is very interesting as an EARLY GERMAN MEZZOTINT ENGRAVING, a process achieved by scraping off the burr in varying degrees from a heavily roughened plate. This technique was just then being developed at Augsburg under the influence of European models. For the present portrait, see Nagler XXIII, 256, no. 25. *** Small round stamps inside front cover and on first blank leaf; imprint of the first printed title somewhat trimmed, likewise the upper text of a folding plate. - Altogether a very good copy. *** Dochnahl 3; Graesse I, 43. Buchbeschreibung: London: printed for P. Vaillant . and W. Mears and F. Clay, 1721. Quarto. (11 1/16 x 9 inches). Title printed in red and black. 22 engraved plates (13 double-page). Contemporary speckled calf, spine in seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering-piece in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt (joints split, corners neatly repaired). First edition in English, with notes by Richard Bradley, of the "first treatise on cuttings and graftings" (Hunt) In 1715-16, Agricola, a German doctor who practiced in his native city of Ratisbon, published some details of his important new method of propagating plants. "This consisted in grafting twigs and boughs to pieces of the same tree, using a plaster containing turpentine and pitch, mixed by means of heat, which he termed 'vegetable mummy'. He also said that if 'vegetable mummy' were used to seal the open end of a cut bud, twig, or leaf, this would produce a root and develop into a new plant or tree. He thus claimed to be able to propagate as many new plants as a plant had twigs or even buds and leaves" (Henrey). Agricola subsequently published a book, in two parts, on the same subject "Here Agricola gives a detailed description of his method and its practical possibilities . This work proved extremely popular and was translated into French, English, and Dutch.' (op. cit.) The French translation was probably by Antoine Augustin Bruzen de la Martinière, and it was translated from this French version into English. (8), 261 (1 blank); (4), 146, 8 pp. First French edition translated from the German of this work which discusses the history and increasement of trees, bushes and flowers, divided in two parts. The German edition was published in Regensburg in 1716-17 in two vols. After that followed the Dutch translation in 1719 and the French in 1720.The chapters are a.o. on the nourishment and soil needed for trees and the ancient practises as well as various 'modern' ways which were applied for the increasement of trees, bushes and flowers. Both parts of the work are illustrated with 17 folding engraved plates each (31 of ca. 17x19 cm, 2 of 31x24 cm and one of 17x30 cm) on which leaves, the growth of peaches, gardening tools etc. are depicted. On the recto of the frontispiece one Felix Vindevogel wrote his name in ink and the manuscript entry in ink on page 146 of part 2 reads 'à l'usage de frere Godefroi Bouvart, Bibliothequaire des Bern, 1723.'Georg Andreas Agricola (1672-1738) was a professor in Medicine and Philosophy on the university of Regensburg. Once he claimed to have found a substance in a vegetable mummy to let trees grow in very short time; in only one hour the mummy should produce 60 trees.
