Szyk, Arthur (illustrator). Original gouache illustration of Thumbelina from Arthur Szyk's illustrated edition of Andersen's Fairy Tales, signed and dated by the artist. In the illustration, Thumbelina, nestled in her walnut shell, shrinks away from a fat toad. In the story, the toad's mother had kidnapped Thumbelina as a bride for her son. In the printed version, the image is captioned: "'Croak, croak, croak,' was all her son could say for himself." Compared to the printed version, the gouache is much more delicate, with muted colors and greater sensitivity. The illustration is double-matted in gold and cream and framed in a gold-painted wooden frame. (Illustration measures 6 1/8 by 5 1/4 inches [155x133mm]. Frame measures 19 1/2 by 16 1/2 inches [500x415mm].) Together with: Andersen's Fairy Tales. NY, Grosset & Dunlap, (1945). Octavo. 327pp. Illustrated by Szyk with black & white illustrations throughout and ten colored plates. Part of the Illustrated Junior Library collection. Bound in pictorial boards, with original acetate jacket with "Andersen's Fairy Tales" printed to upper right corner. All edges dyed purple. Fading to dye at top and fore-edge, bookplate removed from inside front cover, and some chipping to edges of acetate jacket, else fine.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Szyk, Arthur; Kredel, Fritz (illustrator). Reprint. Two Volume Set from 1945, originally came in a slipcase, but this is NOT present here--just the 2 books, no DJs as issued. The Andersen volume contains 29 tales, translated from the original Danish by Mrs. E. V. Lucas & Mrs. H. B. Paull, with delightful illustrations by noted Polish children's book illustrator Arthur Szyk. In 343 pages with illustrated frontispiece, 9 full-color-full page plates (suitable for framing, if desired), multiple pan-and-ink illustrations throughout text, & full-color endpapers. The Grimm volume has 55 stories, with 373 pages, color frontispiece, 9 color plates, & illustrations throughout text by German illustrator Fritz Kredel. Both books are cloth-covered hardcovers (Andersen = green, Grimm = burgundy) with paper paste-down illustrations to front covers & gilt lettering to spines. Both are in VG condition (the Andersen VG+): exceptionally clean & bright, bindings tight & square, pages mildly tanned, more noticeably to edges, but completely unmarked. Exterior show minor rubbing to extremities, heavier in places on the Andersen. A lovely set & a great introduction to these classic fairy tales!
