The Picture of Dorian Gray
Buchbeschreibung: London: Ward, Lock, 1891, 1891. First English Edition; trade issue. Publisher's vellum-backed boards; an exceptional copy; fine in the rare dust jacket. There are some small chips and tears. Six old tape mends have been removed from inside the corners and edges of the dust jacket, leaving stains that have bled through to the surface. We have previously either had two copies in dust jacket, or a single example twice. Whichever is the case, it certainly is a rarity in dust jacket. In a custom quarter-morocco slipcase. THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY
Buchbeschreibung: Ward Lock, 1891. First edition, large paper issue, number 199 of 250 copies, signed by the author. Original parchment spine with grey paper covered boards with gilt titles and vignette to spine and upper cover. Top edge gilt, others uncut. A very good copy indeed that has splits to front and rear joints at the base of the spine and minor wear to the spine ends, but is a generally clean and bright and by the standards of this fragile book, unusually well preserved. Housed in a custom made clamshell cloth box. Wilde's only novel, and longest work of prose, was written as a result of a commission in 1889 from J. M Stoddart, the managing editor of Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, and first published in his magazine in 1890. Critical reaction was generally unfavourable, with comments of depravity, corruption and that the book was suitable only for "perverted telegraph boys". Wilde made various alterations to the first edition and added a preface attempting through a series of epigrams to justify the book's literary merit. Running through the book are the themes of the gothic novel, perhaps owing something to Wilde's great uncle Charles Maturin and his gothic masterpiece, Melmoth, in its psychological manipulation of the subjects. Underlying the plot is the theme of duality encapsulated by Dorian's unchanging public face and deterioration of his hidden portrait, but also the relationship between ethics and aesthetics and how the pursuit of pleasure leads to increasing desensitisation to evil. "The Picture of Dorian Gray is a vindication of the power of literature. a unique form of fiction that fuses gothic, decadent, and melodramatic modes of writing to produce a haunting story that has entered the mythic imagination of subsequent generations." (Anne Markey). Buchnummer des Verkäufers 23167
Salome (Signed and Inscribed to Catulle Mendes by Oscar Wilde)

Text in French. 84 pages. Stiff purple wraps. Inscribed and signed by Oscar Wilde to Catulle Mendes (18411909), French poet, critic, and novelist of the Parnassian school who founded the Revue fantaisiste (1861), contributed to the Parnasse contemporain, and wrote volumes of verse, including Philoméla (1863) and La Grive des vignes (1895). LEvangile de lenfance (1894). It was rumoured that Oscar Wilde and Catulle Mendes were lovers at one time. Tipped to the front endpaper is a small, short telegram from Marcel Schwob to Catulle Mendes. Marcel Schwob's (18671905) work is associated with the decadent and symbolist movements. His volumes of tales include Le Roi au masque d'or/The King with the Golden Mask 1892, Le Livre de Monelle/The Book of Monelle 1894, Vies imaginaires/Imaginary Lives 1896, La Croisade des enfants/The Children's Crusade 1896, and La Lampe de Psyche/Psyche's Lamp 1903. He also wrote essays and various works on the 15th century. Covers sunned to the edges. Light stain to the top edge of the back cover. Top and bottome corners of the front cover lightly creased. Title and ornament in silver to the front cover lightly rubbed. Spine edges look to have been professonally repaired but are fragile. Light, small brown spot to the title page, else internally in fine condition. A most excellent association copy in near fine condition. Inscribed by Author(s). Buchnummer des Verkäufers JPH1058

Ives was a minor poet and founder of the Order of Chaeronea, a secret society for homosexuals. He was to be one of the very few of Wilde's friends who visited him during his imprisonment. The Picture of Dorian Gray. Introduction by André Maurois.
Buchbeschreibung: 1891. WILDE, Oscar. The Picture of Dorian Gray. [2], [viii], 334 pp. 4to., bound in contemporary full vellum, gilt extra, with gilt-lettered spine and ornamental stamps gold-tooled on front cover. In half-morocco protective box. London: Ward, Lock & Co., 1891. First Edition, Limited Issue on Large Paper, one of 250 copies signed by Wilde. Printed on handmade Van Gelder paper and beautifully bound in contemporary vellum by Morley of Oxford. The Picture of Dorian Gray was Oscar Wilde's only novel, a monumental and scandalous Gothic melodrama which aroused howls of public protest when it first appeared in Philadelphia's Lippencott's Magazine during the year of 1890. In the preface, which contains Wilde's most celebrated aphorisms on art, the author challenged his critics by stating that: "There is no such thing as a moral or immoral book. Books are well written or badly written. That is all" (p. vi). It is widely recognized that The Picture of Dorian Gray became the Bible of the aesthetic movement. Ellmann claims that: "In the eighties, aestheticism suffered for lack of example: Dorian Gray filled the need." Fine copy in a special contemporary deluxe binding. Mason 329. Buchbeschreibung: London: Leonard Smithers and Co., 1899, 1899. Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles and decorative flourishes to spine and boards gilt. Inscribed by the author and presumably the recipient on the front free endpaper. Spine a little sunned, a few spots to uncut edges and occasionally elsewhere: a very good copy. First edition, one of 1,000 copies printed of the regular trade issue, inscribed copy, signed by Oscar Wilde on the front free endpaper, and inscribed in another hand above his signature, "Spencer Grey, from". The barrister Egerton Spencer Grey (18631950) was Assistant Official Receiver at the Bankruptcy Court, Carey Street, when Wilde was bankrupted in 1895. (In De Profundis, Wilde movingly recalls Robert Ross's kindness in doffing his hat to him amid the thronged corridors of Carey Street.) Grey had been promoted to Official Receiver in Bankruptcy by the time Wilde's estate was discharged from bankruptcy in July 1906, and had some correspondence with Methuen at that time. Under the circumstances, it is unlikely in the extreme that Wilde presented this copy to Grey. More likely is that Grey obtained a previously signed copy from Wilde's chattels, either at the time of the bankruptcy or at its discharge, and added his own name as if he were its recipient.
