Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. First published in 1935, Old Jules is unquestionably Mari Sandoz's masterpiece. This portrait of her pioneer father grew out of 'the silent hours of listening behind the stove or the wood box, when it was assumed, of course, that I was asleep in bed. So it was that I heard the accounts of the hunts, . . .of the fights with the cattlemen and the sheep-men, of the tragic scarcity of women, when a man had to marry anything that got off the train, of the droughts, the storms, the wind and isolation. But the most impressive stories were those told me by Old Jules himself. Mari Susette Sandoz (May 11, 1896 - March 10, 1966) was a Nebraska novelist, biographer, lecturer, and teacher. She became one of the West's foremost writers, and wrote extensively about pioneer life and the Plains Indians.

Buch Erstausgabe
Trade Paperback. Zustand: As New. Baskin, Leonard - Cover (illustrator). First Bison Book Edition. 430 Pages. An As New book with flawless interior text pages. This is the biography of the author's father Jules Ami Sandoz. She had tried to make it the biography of a community, the upper Niobrara country in western Nebraska. This book grew out of a childhood and adolescence spent among the story-tellers of the frontier, for the frontier, whether by Turner's famous definition or by any other, is a land of story-tellers, and in this respect remains frontier in nature until the last original settler is gone. There is a good deal of America in Old Jules. It is an enthralling story. But it is more than that, and much deeper. It is an experience in citizenship. Contents in 21 Chapters: Spring, Mirage, Jest and Departure, The Return, A Checkered Suit, Henriette, The Niobrara Feud, Rain Makers and a Hunt to the Big Horns, Emelia Cattlemen and Murder, Mary and a Land-Steal Plot, Rain, Hail on the Panhandle, A Polish Wedding, The Kinkaider Comes, Land Frauds, The Killer, Snakebite, The Hills, The Kinkaider Goes, A New Boom, and The Winter.
