Buchbeschreibung: [Vienna], 1932., 1932. Original photograph (220 x 165 mm, vintage print signed in the negative by Max Halberstadt) mounted on cardboard (300 x 238 mm, also with the embossed stamp of the photographer). The most iconic and famous portrait of Freud, here with autograph dedication to Marie Bonaparte's eldest son Pierre, Prince of Greece and Denmark (1908-80), on the occasion of his recovery from an illness. Princess Marie Bonaparte (1882-1962) was a French author and psychoanalyst, closely associated with Sigmund Freud. Her wealth contributed to the popularity of psychoanalysis and enabled Freud's escape from Nazi Germany. In 1925 Marie consulted Freud for treatment of what she described as her frigidity, which was later explained as a failure to have orgasms during missionary position intercourse. It was to Marie Bonaparte that Sigmund Freud remarked, "The great question that has never been answered and which I have not yet been able to answer, despite my thirty years of research into the feminine soul, is 'What does a woman want?'". Despite what she described as sexual dysfunction, she had affairs with Freud's disciple Rudolph Loewenstein as well as with Aristide Briand, the French prime minister. - The story of her relationship with Sigmund Freud was made into a movie, released in 2004 and starring Catherine Deneuve as Princess Marie Bonaparte. - Freud's signature in bold pen at the bottom right of the large photograph; inscribed on the backing cardboard. In excellent condition and untrimmed. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 28690

Buchbeschreibung: Franz Deuticke, Leipzig und Wien, 1900. FIRST EDITION. TP + 1 leaf = 2pp. (Vorbemerkung) + [1]-371 + [372]-[374] = Litteraturverzeichnis + [375] = Inhalt, Octavo.Actually published on November 4, 1899 in an edition of 600 copies. The book sold so slowly that the publisher did not risk a second edition until 1909. None the less, this work (along with perhaps Das Kapital and The Origin of the Species) would prove to be one of the most influential book on the 20th Century, the Century of Psychology. "This is unquestionably Freud's greatest single work. It contains all the basic components of psychoanalytic theory and practice: the erotic nature of dreams, the 'Oedipus complex', the libido, and the rest; all related to the background of the 'unconscious', later to be called the 'sub-conscious'." (PMM, p. 234). This book is the foundational work of the modern psychological movement. In addition, Freud's ideas have had an incalculable influence on many other aspects modern thought and his terminology has entered our everyday language. "By working to uncover the various motivations and desires behind conscious mental functioning, Freud changed the way people perceived not only themselves, but also the world around them." (NYPL Books of the Century 88). Printing and the Mind of Man, 389. Contemporary quarter-leather with green marbled boards. Spine with gilt lettering for author's name, title and number in lowest compartment ("C. II."). Housed in a custom clamshell box. Internally, clean and bright. Overall, a beautiful copy of a major work in Western Civilization. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 45

Buchbeschreibung: Franz Deuticke, Leipzig & Vienna, 1900. Interpretation of DreamsFreud, Sigmund (1856-1939). Die Traumdeutung. [4], 371, [5]pp. Leipzig & Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1900. 230 x 150 mm. Full crimson crushed morocco gilt, top edges gilt; preserved in quarter morocco drop-back box. Title-leaf skillfully backed without loss of imprint on verso, inner margin of second leaf expertly repaired, but very good.First Edition. Die Traumdeutung contains Freud's general theory of the psyche, which he had developed during the past decade. Using his refined understanding of the operation of the unconscious, Freud interpreted dreams on the basis of his wish-fulfillment theory and discussed displacement (the appearance in conscious thought of symbols for repressed desires), regression, Oedipal impulses and the erotic nature of dreams. Although this was his first major work on normal psychology, Freud gave an unprecedented precision and force to the idea of the essential similarities of normal and abnormal behavior, opening up the door to the irrational that had been closed to Western psychology since the time of Locke. Only 600 copies of the first edition of Die Traumdeutung were printed, and the book sold so slowly that the second edition did not appear until nine years later. Jones (Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, I, p. 395) states that the book "was actually published on November 4, 1899, but the publisher chose to put the date 1900 on the title page." Buchbeschreibung: 1895. Couverture souple. Buchzustand: Très bon. Edition originale. This rather strange title is, in fact, the heading of a schooarly dissertation on a mental state, later described as anxiety neurosis by Freud.

Freud showed that the Reissner cells 'gave rise to the root-fibres of the posterior roots' (Standard edition III, p. 228). An exceptional association copy of one of the author's best known works with a fine and sentimental presentation, in German, to Sigmund Freud in the year of publication. Stefan Zweig had known and admired Freud since the turn of the century when he [Zweig] belonged to a circle of young Austrian writers known as "Jung Wien". English translation included. To his former patient, the Austrian poet Arthur Fischer-Colbrie: "I thank you kindly for your letter and greetings and confirm that you have a right to assume I was still following your developments and your final success with the same interest as I once did your caprices during treatment. What a peculiar, actually almost incredible path fate has taken you up to now! But remember that I recognized your extraordinary gifts early on and demanded you trust in them. . . ." "The Austrian writer A. Fischer-Colbrie underwent an analysis with Freud in 1915-16 and then again in 1919 . . . When the cure had to be interrupted because of the young man's military service, Freud sustained an unusual correspondence with him that reflected his efforts to maintain their therapeutic contact. At the same time his letters witness Fischer-Colbrie's burgeoning literary talents" (Walder, C. "I Don't Want to Be Eternally Imprisoned in the Cage of My Own Self . . .". Buchbeschreibung: The early practitioners of psychoanalysis and followers of Freud began to meet regularly in late 1902 on Wednesdays at Freud's home at Bergasse 19, in Vienna. The small group of medical doctors broadened to 16 members by 1906. This card from 1904 reflects the initial period of expansion of the group. According to historian, Peter Gay, "The gatherings followed a definite ritual. First one of the members would present a paper. Then, black coffee and cakes were served; cigar and cigarettes were on the table and were consumed in great quantities. After a social quarter of an hour, the discussion would begin. The last and decisive word was always spoken by Freud himself. "[FreudÊ: A Life for Our Time, 1988]. Stekel [1868-1940] is regarded as the motivating force behind establishing the society. Reitler [1865-1917], an Austrian physician and early practitioner of psychoanalysis remained a member of the group. The case of GrafÕs son, Hans, known as ÒLittle Hans,Ó was discussed in these early years. The card represents a rare collection of the founders and early practitioners of psychoanalysis. Freud signed the card as ÒDr. FreudÓ addressed to colleague, ÒDr. Wilhelm Stekel.Ó The text penned in another hand reads, ÒFor the successful evening we thank you, your organizers and intellectual motivators.Ó Next to Freud, an original member of the society, ÒDr. Rudolf Reitler,Ó signs. Below Freud and in a smaller hand, the first president of the Society signs, ÒDr. Alfred Adler.Ó Then, ÒDr. [Adolf] DeutschÓ signs, followed by Max Graf, then under AdlerÕs signature is "Dr. BachÓ [Dr. David Josef Bach]. Dr. Alfred Bass signs, "Bass," in the lower right corner in a small hand. Buchnummer des Verkäufers 2159

Buchbeschreibung: [Leipzig: Veit, 1884]., 1884. Soft cover. Buchzustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Pp. [453]-60. Original wrappers. Ink stamp "HISTOLOGIE/ Collège de France" on front wrapper. Ink note "Technique/ I x y z" (?by Ranvier) on front wrapper. Very Good. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY SIGMUND FREUD: "Hommage de l'auteur." The recipient was probably Louis Ranvier, who was the histologist at the Collège de France. The offprint of another paper on neurohistology by Freud--with the same ink stamp "HISTOLOGIE/ Collège de France" and with an inscription from Freud to Ranvier ("Monsieur le Professeur Ranvier hommage respectueux de l’auteur")--supports the view that Ranvier was the recipient of the offprint offered here. When Freud was in Paris from October 13, 1885-February 28, 1886, he met Ranvier at the Collège de France. Later he saw Ranvier at a dinner party given by Charcot. Freud described that meeting in a letter: "A particularly pleasant event for me was the arrival during the evening of M. Ranvier, the famous histologist, who had given me such a friendly reception in the Collège de France. I think he spoke to Charcot about me, and I myself had a pleasant talk with him later. My confidence as a judge of human nature received a considerable boost when he confided in me that he would have liked best to be a professor in a small German university--for instance, Bonn--for in a letter to Paneth I had described him as a 'German university professor badly translated into French' " (Letters of Sigmund Freud, ed. E. Freud, p. 207). Ranvier was one of only two people (the other being Charcot) who invited Freud to a dinner party while Freud was in Paris (Jones, Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, Vol. 1, p. 188). Grinstein, Sigmund Freud's Writings 30 (1884d). "Freud's full account of his method of staining nerve tissue with gold chloride. . . . An English version of this paper was published in Brain 7 (1884) pp. 86-89, under the title 'A new histological method for the study of nerve-tracts in the brain and spinal cord' " (Norman F6). "In February [Freud] heard that Weigert had invented a new method for staining nervous tissue, so he hastened to send a 'Preliminary Communication' on his own method to the Centralblatt für die medizinischen Wissenschaften, reserving the full account for Pflüger's Archiv für Anatomie und Physiologie [the full account is offered here]. He also got his friend Fleischl to send a paper to Ferrier in London for publication in Brain. . . . He wrote this one in English, but got an American to correct it. Freud was aware of the special difficulty with all such methods, which he pointed out as follows: 'Innumerable methods have been devised by histologists which proved themselves useful only in the hands of their inventors; that is why I have decided to publish even the pettiest directions.' Freud was himself highly pleased with the success of his method. which gave him 'a wonderfully clear and precise picture' of the cells and fibers. It caused some sensation at the time, and demands at once came in for it to be published in Czech, Italian, and Russian. The results of subsequent trials, however, were more variable; in some hands it produced excellent results, in others more uncertain and therefore unreliable ones. Brücke told him his various new methods alone would bring him fame" (Jones, ibid., Vol. 1, pp. 203-04). Shepherd, Foundations of the Neuron Doctrine (ch. 7, "The Nerve Cell Studies of Freud"). Buchbeschreibung: Arion Press, 1993. Hardcover. Buchzustand: New. This impressive artist's book is a signed, limited edition combining the work of Sigmund Freud with with 5 etchings and 6 woodcuts by the celebrated artist Jim Dine, plus a separate large format etching. Of Freud's case histories, that of the Wolf-Man, under the title "From the History of an Infantile Neurosis", is the most famous, not only for its importance to the development of Freud's thought but also for the grip upon public imagination that it holds to this day. It was written in the winter of 1914-15, shortly after termination of a treatment that had begun in 1910. The subject, the son of a wealthy Russian landowner, was tormented by a childhood dream of white wolves sitting staring at him from the bare branches of a tree outside his bedroom window in winter. This and other vivid images released by the psychoanalysis are used by Dine. Jim Dine is an artist of international stature. His paintings, sculpture, drawings, and prints are in the collections of major museums throughout the world. The introductory essay by the philosopher and art historian Richard Wollheim reviews the story of the Wolf-man and considers the significance of this case for Freud, his followers, and critics. The book is designed by Andrew Hoyem, and printed by letterpress in a format of 11-7/8 by 9-1/2 inches. The types are Monotype Century Old Style, handset Century Expanded italic, and Miller & Richard Old Style capitals, in black and red inks. The paper is French mouldmade Johannot for the text and English mouldmade T. H. Saunders Drawing for the prints. The binding has a goatskin spine and cloth over boards, in a cloth and paper slipcase. The book is numbered and signed by the artist in an edition of 250 copies. This is one of 30 copies with an extra etching by Jim Dine, "The Wolf-Man's Dream", issued to accompany the book. The prints are in black ink with the title printed from a relief block in red ink. The intaglio image is 45 by 39 inches on mouldmade paper 59 by 44 inches. The prints are numbered and signed by the artist. 116 pages. Signed by Illustrator(s). Buchnummer des Verkäufers 041

Buchbeschreibung: Letter. Buchzustand: Very Good. 22.8 x 14.8cm. Horizontally creased with some wear along the crease. With a typed English translation included. Written as an addendum to a letter just sent to Bernays in an effort to answer two questions raised by Bernays in a letter sent to Anna. In the quite formal letter just sent Freud had agreed to head a foundation to be set up in American to promote psychoanalysis. Here he specifies that he wants Karl Abraham, Max Eitingon, and Sandor Ferenczi to be the European members of the committee. There is an argument against accepting more than a few American analysts as directors, since they would surely favor using the money in America, which will get us nothing. ["Es gibt ein Argument dagegen, mehrere der dortigen Analytiker aufzunehmen. Sie werden gewiss dafür sein, dass das Geld in Amerika verwendet wird, wovon wir nichts haben. Ueberlegen Dir diesen Punkt."] The two detailed questions on costs for a scholarship and gratuitious treatment are very difficult to answer. They can be taken care of later by putting the questions to the policlinik in Berlin. Freud then notes that he has just received the Spanish translation of "Selbstdarstellung," which he had given to Edward. Its existence proves that the publisher in Leipzig will allow an isolated translation. Freud closes "Dein Onkel" [typed], signed "Sigm." with a typed P.S. noting that Martin has returned and asking Edward to let them know how long they are going to stay in Vienna. Buchbeschreibung: Deuticke, Leipzig, 1905. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. [ii], 83, [1] pp. Original printed wrappers preserved in a clamshell box. An excellent copy with the back strip redone. First edition of the work which Freud himself considered second in importance only to his Die Traumdeutung. Freud introduces here his epochal theory of infantile sexuality, which linked the forces motivating the development of body and mind from earliest infancy, a contribution of utmost value. Infantile sexuality was a fact known, Freud said, to every nursemaid, yet the Three essays provoked (and still provokes) considerable controversy in both scientific and popular sectors. The importance of the Three essays to Freud is underscored by the fact that it was the only book besides The interpretation of dreams that he submitted to constant revision, with six editions published in his lifetime. Buchbeschreibung: Franz Deuticke, Leipzig & Vienna, 1895. Beginning of PsychoanalysisFreud, Sigmund (1856-1939) and Josef Breuer (1842-1925). Studien über Hysterie. [6], 269pp. Leipzig & Vienna: Franz Deuticke, 1895. Half morocco ca. 1895, extremities and corners slightly rubbed; preserved in cloth drop-back box. Fine.First Edition. Studies in Hysteria, which gives the first detailed account of the free-association method, is customarily regarded as the starting-point of psychoanalysis. Breuer had discovered the "cathartic" method of curing hysteria in the early 1880s while treating the patient who would later be immortalized as "Anna O."; this patient, who exhibited a myriad of severe hysterical symptoms, found that the symptoms would disappear when she told Breuer the details of their onset. (Jones gives "Anna O.," whose real name was Bertha Pappenheim, a large share of the credit for inventing what she called the "talking cure.") Freud learned of this interesting case from Breuer shortly after its termination in June 1882; it made a strong impression on him, and a few years later he began using a combination of hypnosis and the cathartic method in his own neurological practice. From this Freud gradually developed the method of free association, in which the patient was encouraged to say whatever came into his mind however "nonsensical" or "irrelevant," since Freud believed that the patient's statements provided clues about the network of associations already established in his mind, and would thus lead the therapist to the source of the patient's neurosis. "It was through devising the new method that Freud was enabled to penetrate into the previously unknown realm of the unconscious proper and to make the profound discoveries with which his name is imperishably associated" (Jones, Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, I, p. 265). Buchbeschreibung: Franz Deuticke, Leipzig, 1891. Freud's Rare First BookFreud, Sigmund (1856-1939). Zur Auffasung der Aphasien. 8vo. [4] 107 [1]pp. Leipzig & Vienna: Deuticke, 1891. Modern cloth. Light browning, small ink & perforated library stamps on title, but very good. Library bookplate.First Edition. Freud's treatise on aphasia, his first book, was little known or appreciated by contemporary neurologists, but Freud always regarded it as the most significant of his neurological writings. Freud was the first to criticize the foundations of the Wernicke-Lichtheim theory of aphasia, which held that losses of function in aphasia were caused by lesions to anatomically circumscribed centers corresponding to the various functions in language. Freud demonstrated that this concept led to localization schemes of labyrinthine complexity and did not fit with specific case studies; it was thus necessary to assume that the cerebral areas involved in language were less circumscribed. "Freud's greatest work, the influence of which has been felt far beyond the psychiatric and medical community" (Garrison-Morton). Buchnummer des Verkäufers 11064
