Mass Market Paperback. Zustand: Near Fine. James Avati (illustrator). First Printing. Jackson, Charles. THE OUTER EDGES. NY: Signet, 1950 (April, #781). First Paperback Edition, first printing. INSCRIBED BY COVER ARTIST JAMES AVATI on the title page in black ink. A NEAR FINE copy, fresh and likely unread, with only the tiniest bit of edgewear, of this minor masterpiece by the author of THE LOST WEEKEND. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. This particular cover is a masterpiece of Noir menace, as the fiendish moron killer eyeballs his prey with a kind of creepy realism which other noir paperback art simply could not equal. Avati's brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or fear, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. He created a visual narrative that brought characters' tragedies and yearnings to life with a tough-minded gritty realism that put Norman Rockwell to shame. We were fortunate to acquire a small cache of his famous Signet first printing covers which were signed by him at his home in Petaluma, California a half-dozen years before he passed away. To the best of our knowledge, he never signed any other books for which he provided illustrations other than the ones which were acquired on this one occasion. Please search the keywords James Avati to see if any of his signed copies still remain in our stock. Signed by Author(s).

Signed color print. Folio (13¼" X 25½"). Near fine. Superb heavy stock color print of AT & T's most famous telephone directory cover, the 1976 bicentennial cover of which 176,000,000 -- that's right, ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY-SIX MILLION! -- copies were distributed. Depicted are 10 rows of portraits of historic figures and characters (two images per person) speaking on a variety of telephones. In order (spelled out in caption): Benjamin Franklin, the Statue of Liberty, an astronaut, a telephone operator, Thomas Jefferson, a Native American, Abraham Lincoln, Shirley Temple, John D. Rockefeller, an Eskimo, Will Rogers, Frederick Douglass, Norman Rockwell, Paul Revere, a young rebel, Robert E. Lee, a senorita, G.I. Joe, Whistler's Mother, man's best friend, Alexander Graham Bell, Jackie Robinson, Betsy Ross, Mark Twain, child's birthday party, Uncle Sam, the American teenager, a father, a Cub Scout, Marian Anderson, George Washington, a "visual phone of the future." On the large blank lower margin, the artist boldly signs and inscribes in black fineline "to Mr. Arnold Gates / Wouldn't it have been good if Lincoln / Franklin and Jefferson could really have / talked -- with Marilyn Monroe present? / Stanley Meltzoff / picture maker." Gates (1914-93) was a noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar and officer of the New York Civil War Round Table. Meltzoff was a renowned artist and illustrator who began with "Stars & Stripes" during World War II, produced illustrations and covers for "Life," "Saturday Evening Post," "The Atlantic," "Scientific American" (65 covers) and other major magazines before pioneering the field of wildlife painting, becoming the "Father of Fish Painting" in the process. Signed copies of the iconic Ma Bell image are seldom encountered.

INSCRIBED BY COVER ARTIST JAMES AVATI on the title page in black ink. A Very Good Plus copy, with a touch of edgewear and a small amount of lift to the lamination else bright and square, of this classic crime novel by the author of THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY. This particular cover is one of Avati's more famous, a brilliantly steamy hardcore noir piece of seductive cover art. Mass Market Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. James Avati (illustrator). Caldwell, Erskine. GEORGIA BOY. Two copies, both Signet, #760 (first printing, 1950 & fifth revised printing, 1957). BOTH COPIES SIGNED BY COVER ARTIST JAMES AVATI. The 1950 paperback is in Very Good condition (lamination lift and edge-wear)) and the 1957 Version is Near Fine (just a few trifling blemishes). An unusual opportunity to see a cover artist's evolution. Avati always read the books he illustrated and from the illustrations, one can see his vision went from a kind of innocence to a far more sophisticated, if suggestive, view point only seven years later. James Avati (1912-2005) was often called "The Rembrandt" of 1940s and 1950s paperback illustration. He popularized authors such as Erskine Caldwell and William Faulkner for the average reader with alluring cover art which sported extraordinary emotional impact. His brilliance in capturing human feeling: tension or pain, suggestiveness or lust, avarice or suspicion, compassion or devotion was unrivaled during the golden age of paperback illustration. Please search the keywords James Avati to see if any other of his signed copies still remain in our stock. GEORGIA BOY was originally written as a hardcover in 1943 and its stories compare well to Caldwell's classics "God's Little Acre" and "Tobacco Road." However Caldwell wasn't widely read until the 1950s when Signet and James Avait led a revival of his popularity by making his books cheaply and providing compelling cover art such as that found on these copies. First edition, second printing of this bold analysis of modern America. Octavo, original half cloth. From the library of Joan Didion with an autograph note on The Economist Group business letterhead signed and entirely in the hand of John Micklethwait, "Dear Joan, As promised (or threatened) here is a copy of my soon-to-be-released book on conservative America, in which you make a fleeting appearance. John Micklethwait." American journalist and novelist Joan Didion gained a reputation in the 1960s and 70s as a pioneer of the New Journalism style of news writing. Her articles and political writing engaged audiences in the realities of the counterculture of the 1960s, the Hollywood lifestyle, California culture, and California history. She also gained recognition for her sensational novels, including her first nonfiction book, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, a collection of magazine pieces about her experiences in California. In 2005, Didion won the National Book Award for Nonfiction and was a finalist for both the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for The Year of Magical Thinking, a memoir of the year following the death of her husband. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket painting by Norman Rockwell. "Elegantly written, comprehensive and scrupulously fair-minded, The Right Nation is required reading for anybody who wants to understand the United States today" (Walter Russell Mead).
