Full morocco. Zustand: Fine. Kaulbach, Wilhelm Von; Engravers are R. Rahn and A. Schleich (illustrator). First Edition. Folio. 257 pp + 1 (register of plates, shown in miniature boxes)., with 37 plates, including the plate at page 43 subsequently suppressed by censors. Generally clean and fresh. Some trivial foxing in preliminary pages. Binding tight. All edges gilt. Gorgeous modern red morocco binding in mint condition, with five raised bands on spine. Marbled endpapers.
Couverture rigide. [ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND] 257pp.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. First Illustrated Edition. Full deep burgundy morcco, gilt-stamped lettering illustration on front board, lavishly stamped in gilt and blind on rear board and spine, all edges gilt; folio (280 x 350 mm); with wonderful steel engravings throughout, including frontispiece, additional title-p., 35 plates, and head- and tail-pieces. First illustrated edition, first issue, with the plate after p. 42 showing the fox diving under a monk's habit (suggestive of something delightfully naughty, which is perhaps why the plate was later suppressed). Rebacked, with original spine laid down; some very light rubbing along edges of boards; scattered foxing throughout, mostly marginal, though sometimes infringing into the text or illustrations. Wilhelm von Kaulbach's fine engravings and remarkably detailed anthropomorphic animals enliven Goethe's version of the 13th-century allegory, known in English literature as "Reynard the Fox." Spectacular.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1857 Reynard the Fox by Goethe Reineke Fuchs Fable German Fairy Tale Illustrated Reynard the Fox has been a stable of fairy tale lore for centuries, with many countries, such as German, France, and other Low Countries, claiming the honor of his birth-place. Told as a brute-epic , this tale of cunning mischief was finally written and printed during the late 15th- and early 16th-centuries. In fact, some scholars believe the origins of Reynard to have come from the 9th-century! Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a famous German author who is best known for his novels and epic poems such as Sorrows of Young Werther and Faust . One of his less-popular works, curiously, was his edition of the famous fable Reynard the Fox . Item number: #13782 Price: $550 GOETHE, Johann Wolfgang von Reineke Fuchs Stuttgart : J. G.
