Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). Quarto. xi, 162pp., + 12ff. plates. One of 1,100 copies. Because Rackham was away from London while this book was in production, most copies of the deluxe edition went unsigned; however, this copy has been signed by Rackham on the limitation page. Contains thirteen large tipped-in color plates and many black & white drawings, which offer Rackham's distinctive, new interpretation of scenes made famous in Tenniel's classic illustrations, such as Alice's encounter with the caterpillar, the Caucus Race, and the Mad Tea Party. Hudson describes Rackham's undertaking as "the most controversial of his career," but concludes that "he has certainly made the greatest impression of all Tenniel's multitude of successors." The book opens with a "proem" by Austin Dobson that cheekily addresses the challenge of illustrating such a classic work, saying, "here comes a fresh costumier" to interpret the story according to his own taste. In the publisher's gilt-stamped white cloth bearing the title and a design of the Gryphon and Mock Turtle on the front cover. Cloth shows light finger soiling and minute toning to spine and endpapers; rear hinge started. T.e.g. A pleasing copy overall. (Latimore & Haskell, p. 28; Hudson, pp. 70-78).

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). 1st Edition. Carroll, Lewis. (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., [n. d. but 1907]. First American De Luxe Edition illustrated by Arthur Rackham. With a "proem" by Austin Dobson. Limited to 550 numbered copies SIGNED by the publisher of which this is #114. Large quarto. Thirteen full-page tipped-in colored plates with all tissue guards present, illustrations sized much larger than those found in the first trade edition. This large paper edition is 162pp and measures 11 1/2" x 9 ¼". Original publisher's quarter dark green cloth over light green boards lettered in gilt with a small onlay image of Alice affixed to the upper board, t.e.g. A VERY FINE copy in ORIGINAL GLASSINE DUST JACKET still residing inside its matching green ORIGINAL CARDBOARD GIFT BOX. Virtually as new and untouched, an astonishing survival. In 1907, after more than forty years, Lewis Carroll's classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland entered the public domain. That year, many new editions of Alice's Adventures were free to be published. Of those, Arthur Rackham's 1907 illustrated version is arguably the most iconic (and the most sought after) visual interpretation of Alice outside of the original Victorian era drawings by John Tenniel. In thirty years of selling Lewis Carroll desiderata, this is the first time we've ever seen the Doubleday Edition De Luxe in its original glassine DJ (much less with its original gift box). Also included, an example of the first American Trade Edition (c.1907, printed in England) as a reading copy. Signed by Author(s).

Original buckram. Zustand: Very Good. Arthur Rackham (illustrator). first Rackham edition. DELUXE LIMITED EDITION in exceedingly rare original slipcase. WITH: RACKHAM INK DRAWING of the Gryphon. The book: "Rackham embarked on his new edition of Alice in Wonderland, with illustrations to rival John Tenniel's, when the book came out of copyright in 1907. Rackham's advantage over Tenniel was that now he could introduce colour; also his pen line would not be reproduced by wood-engraving. This gave him some new freedoms for invention, but his amendments to the ingrained image of Alice were not only technical. Rackham's Alice was very much a fleshly Edwardian child who would question the status quo of Wonderland. Her courtesy carried an undercurrent of insistent argument. A contemporary critic observed 'a tender, flickering light of imagination in [Alice's] eyes' (Daily Telegraph, 27 Nov 1907). (Dictionary of National Biography). This deluxe limited edition is number 1030 of 1130 copies, unsigned as issued. (Rackham was out of the country when the book was published and did not sign the edition.) Complete with thirteen large tipped-in color plates and many black and white drawings. In the exceedingly rare original "windowed" slipcase: We can only find records of very few references to the original slipcase, although numerous copies exhibit the patch of rectangular discoloration corresponding to the cut-out opening of the slipcase, designed to display the gilt title and the gilt cover illustrations of the turtle and gryphon. The drawing: Laid-in is a large pen and ink drawing of the gryphon, signed by Rackham ("ARackham") and dated ("07") the same year as the book. The drawing is similar to the one on page 119 of the text, but is larger and with much more detail. Size: sheet = 7 1/4x9 (184x228 mm); image = approx. 5 1/2x7 in (136x180 mm). London and New York: William Heinemann and Doubleday, Page, & Co., 1907.Quarto, original white buckram gilt, original marbled slipcase with morocco edges and cutout displaying the title and illustrations on the front panel. Drawing laid-in. Book with mild rectangular "ghosting" from where the cloth was exposed when in the slipcase; mild toning to spine and a few stray spots but cloth exceptionally clean and bright. Corners a little bumped. Slipcase with general rubbing to marbled paper and chips around the frame of the cutout. Matte for one plate with small abrasions at gutter. Text and plates nearly pristine. Drawing was previously framed, resulting in toning to paper where it was exposed (ink crisp and fine). A beautiful copy of a Rackham classic, complete with the very rare slipcase and a unique Rackham ink drawing.

Zustand: Fine. Barry Moser (illustrator). Moser's Alice joins the ranks of the earlier spectacular Alices: Tenniel, Rackham, Dali: not only do the 75 images dance and sprawl across the pages, but they reflect new visions of the text. These images range from marginalia to images merged into the text, to full page and on to two page spreads. The text is printed in black, with highlighted words in red or blue. Moser's signature is in purple, as is the limitation number, 157 of 350. The book is half bound in purple morocco with boards covered in a coordinating hand marbled paper, from the workshop of Gray Parrot. The type was cast and composed by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Further hand composition was done by Arthur Larson. Text and blocks were printed by Harold McGrath on Puligeum, a paper specially made for Pennyroyal by the Strathmore Paper Company. The clamshell case is quarter bound in morocco with cloth covered sides. The extra set of 75 prints, each signed by Moser, is enclosed in a matching cloth covered portfolio. A cover letter to the Reader from Moser explains the status of the prints in the portfolio. The prints produced for the copies of the book are fine, but some of the blocks cracked when they were put through the press for a second run. At this point, Moser decided to continue to print the second set as is--there was no time to re-do the blocks. The book and portfolio are fine, the box fine, with some discoloring and rubbing to the spine of the box (see the photographs). Gray Parrot binding half bound in purple Morocco with boards covered in a coordinating hand marbled paper.

Re: The Illustrations The manuscript was illustrated by Carroll himself who added 37 illustrations printed in a facsimile edition in 1887.[21] John Tenniel provided 42 wood-engraved illustrations for the published version of the book.[63] The first print run was destroyed (or sold to the US[64]) at Carroll's request because he was dissatisfied with the quality. There are only 22 known first edition copies in existence.[63] The book was reprinted and published in 1866.[21] Tenniel's detailed black-and-white drawings remain the definitive depiction of the characters.[65] Tenniel s illustrations of Alice do not portray the real Alice Liddell,[42] who had dark hair and a short fringe. Alice has provided a challenge for other illustrators, including those of 1907 by Charles Pears and the full series of colour plates and line-drawings by Harry Rountree published in the (inter-War) Children's Press (Glasgow) edition. Other significant illustrators include: Arthur Rackham (1907), Willy Pogany (1929), Mervyn Peake (1946), Ralph Steadman (1967), Salvador Dalí (1969), Graham Overden (1969), Max Ernst (1970), Peter Blake (1970), Tove Jansson (1977), Anthony Browne (1988), Helen Oxenbury (1999),[66] and Lisbeth Zwerger (1999). First edition, second impression with Rackham's illustrations. 13 color plates with captioned tissue guards, illustrated end-leaves and numerous black and white illustrations throughout the text, all by Arthur Rackham. Small 4to, publisher's original green cloth with pictorial design in gilt on the upper cover, lettered in dark green on the cover and spine. xi, 162 pp. A pleasing and well preserved copy of a book rarely found so, this copy is free of the typical foxing, the cloth with the lettering and gilt still bold, some light evidence of shelving or use. FIRST EDITION, EARLY IMPRESSION OF THIS SIGNIFICANT WORK, VERY SCARCE NOW. This edition, was the first with Arthur Rackham's illustrations. The controversy which ensued, as critics protested the "presumptuous" replacement of John Tenniel's illustrations, spurred sales of the book. The publisher sold 14,322 copies of Alice at 6 shillings each within the first 6 months of its issue, resulting in Arthur Rackham s all-time most successful book debut. While reviewers scorned Rackham s artistic audacity, the public supported his fresh interpretation. One uncharacteristically favorable review by The Daily Telegraph remarked, "The Alice .is not the heroine of Sir John Tenniel s imagination; she is older and more sophisticated; but at the same time she has a tender, flickering light of imagination in her eyes, which lifts her out of the domain of the merely pretty and childish.Mr. Rackham s inexhaustible imagination, working over and embroidering the ground-work of Tenniel s types, has added a really wonderful wealth of uncanny, dreamlike mystery to the story.and extraordinary feeling into the drawing of the hands." - Hamilton Rackham s Alice is sure to delight readers today with its fanciful creatures, its charming depiction of the heroine Alice, and its consistent good humor. And be sure to look for the artist s self-caricature in his rendition of the Mad Hatter in "The Mad Hatter s Tea Party.".

IF YOU DO NOT CHOOSE PRIORITY MAIL YOU ORDER WILL BE REFUSED AND I WILL NOT TRADE WITH YOU AGAIN. *** This is a UK first edition hardcover published by William Heinemann in 1907. The photos show the condition better than I can describe, however overall I am grading as Very Good for its age, heading towards Near Fine. The book has a straight spine, sharp corners and firm spine ends, with a lightly sunned spine. The gilt illustration on the front cover is intact and not rubbed and the text on the boards is likewise complete. There is the inevitable page toning to the edges but the interior of the book is clean, aside from the odd fox spot. There is an owner inscription dated 1908 to the front end paper, which promotes Rip Van Winkle on the reverse at 15s net. The title page states there is also a "proem by Austin Dobson" and confirms the publisher as William Heinemann.
