Buch Erstausgabe
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. New York: Avon Book Company, 1949. Issue #10. First Edition. Illustrated wraps, 7 5/8" x 5 1/4", 128 pp. Typical age-toning of the paper, short tear at spine top, small-scale occasional soiling and edgewear, the number "20" written on cover. Very Good, a nice copy. By the time of this tenth installment in Wollheim's well-regarded five-year, eighteen issue genre pulp series, which focused primarily on science fiction, fantasy and horror, Avon Books had learned what sold the genre at newstands - to wit, the now classic luridness and feminine pulchritude on its covers. This one features a buff warrior in Roman centurion-style attire resuing an unconscious young damsel - who does indeed look eminently rescuable - from the clutches of a froggish, otherwise indescribable monster. Inside, however, Wollheim continued his selection of top-flight genre fiction. His introduction of each author's piece always carried some point of interesting information - even with famous authors already included several times in the series, such as H.P. Lovecraft. In this issue: A Witch Shall Be Born (Robert E. Howard); Vengeance in Her Bones (Malcolm Jameson); The Mentanicals (Francis Flagg); The Gostak and the Doshes (Miles J. Breuer); The Statement of Randolph Carter (H.P. Lovecraft); Bimini (Bassett Morgan); Omega (Amelia Reynolds Long); and Storm Warning (Donald A. Wollheim). Wollheim kept it quality, cover to cover. A landmark of the genre. L81.

Buch Erstausgabe
Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Everett Raymond Kinstler et al (illustrator). First Edition. New York: Avon Book Company, 1952. Volume 1, Number 1; the January, 1953 issue, though as a periodical it was of course copyrighted in 1952. First Edition. Thoroughly illustrated by various genre specialists. Illustrated wraps, 7 5/8" x 5 1/4", 128 pp. Small-scale occasional edgewear, small chip at spine bottom. Very Good or a bit better in wraps; a nice copy. Contents are near fine; no trace of the age-toning of the pages which plagued most pulps of the era, including the two Avon predecessor series which spawned this one. Those predecessors - Donald Wollheim's well-regarded five-year, eighteen-issue Avon Fantasy Reader and his three-issue Avon Science Fiction Reader (1951-52) were combined under Sol Cohen's editorship for this new combined Avon Science Fiction and Fantasy Reader. But, despite the apparently better-quality paper, many more illustrations by a variety of artists than in previous incarnations, and a very impressive array of writers, there would be only two issues under this name. Choosing the appropriate magazine name to appeal to greatest number genre readers seemed to be an ongoing problem from the forties to the sixties; the forest of names in the "Fantastic" series is legendary. The lead story in this first issue is Arthur C. Clarke's ominous "The Forgotten Enemy". Others: "For Humans Only" (Alfred J. Coppel, Jr.); "Like Gods They Came" (Irving Cox, Jr.); "The Agents" (Bryce Walton); "Mr. Kowtshook" (John Christopher); "The Space Ark" (book reviews by Noah Gordon); "The Shed" (E. Everett Evans); "Come Blow Your Horn" (Milton Lesser, one of many aliases of the duo who were also Ellery Queen et al); "The Call of the Black Lagoon" (Charles L. Harness); "Agratha" (Glen Malin); "Checkmate Morning" (John Jakes); "One-Man God" (Frank Owen); and "The Short Count" (Theodore R. Cogswell). Outstanding illustrations by Everett Raymond Kinstler and others. A landmark of the genre, the first issue of two, in superior condition. LT71.

Soft Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. ----------This set will require NO additional shipping charges for standard shipping for a US or Canadian order, overseas orders will require a shipping charge DRAMATICALLY LESS than actual postage (inquire). 23 pulp magazines, digest size, sometimes considered to be digest size vintage paperbacks, and also considered to be series of anthologies . The Avon Fantasy Reader (AFR), with Donald Wollheim as editor, ran for 18 issues from 1947 to 1952. There were a few original stories, but most were reprints, a large number coming from Weird Tales. Some authors included are William Hope Hodgson, August Derleth, H.G. Wells, Murray Leinster, A. Merritt, Clark Ashton Smith, Lord Dunsany, Fletcher Pratt, David H. Keller, Guy Endore, Robert E. Howard, Robert W. Chambers, C.L. Moore, H.P. Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, John Collier, Nelson Bond, A.E. Van Vogt, Robert Bloch, C.M. Kornbluth, Jack Williamson, Thorp McClusky, David H. Keller, Sax Rohmer, Fritz Leiber, Frank Gruber, Ambrose Bierce, Algernon Blackwood, Otis Adelbert Kline, Malcolm Jameson, Seabury Quinn, Manly Wade Wellman, Clifford Simak, Ray Cummings, Stanley G. Weinbaum, M.P. Shiel, G.K. Chesterton, Anthony Boucher, Hugh B. Cave. Also under Wollheim, the Avon Science Fiction Reader (ASFR) ran for 3 issues in 1951-1952, and entirely consisted of reprints, including stories by Edmond Hamilton, Murray Leinster, A. Merritt, Jack Williamson, Frank Belknap Long, Clark Ashton Smith, Ray Cummings, Robert A.W. Lowndes, Lord Dunsany, S. Fowler Wright, H.P. Lovecraft and Hannes Bok. When Wollheim left Avon in 1952, the 2 lines were merged as Avon Science Fiction & Fantasy Reader (ASF&FR) for 2 1953 issues, under the editorship of Sol Cohen. For some reason, the publisher of the final issue (April 1953) was Stratford Novels, a subsidiary of Avon, rather than Avon. ASF&FR included illustrations (the 2 earlier runs did not), and published all original stories of very good quality, including works by Arthur C. Clarke, John Jakes, John Christopher, Charles L. Harness, Jack Vance, and Stephen Marlowe. Condition notes follow. AFR: # 5 has covers detached but still looks great, #s 4, 10 & 15 have faint cover creases and are VG+, # 17 has faint cover creases, back cover soiling, and is VG, some others have modest shelfwear, several are unread, and are near fine to fine. ASFR: # 2 has faint cover creases and is VG+, the other 2 have modest shelfwear and are near fine to fine. ASF&FR: both volumes are almost as new unread copies.
