Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First British edition in English. Translated from the German by Eugene Jolas. A touch of foxing at the page ends, else fine in very good dust jacket with subtle foxing, light spine toning and moderate edgewear, including some tears, nicks, and tiny creases. A landmark of modernist German literature that tells the story of a smalltime criminal, newly released from prison, who strives for a better life but is slowly pulled back into a life of crime. A surprisingly uncommon edition.

8vo. 1 blank f., (5), 12-528, (6) pp., final blank f. Original cloth with cover and spine title stamped in red, top edge red. Original dustjacket. First edition of the famous novel of the German metropolis. Includes the rare, well-preserved original dustjacket by George Salter: the revolutionary visual design combined Döblin's specially written blurb with seemingly naive elements of poster art and advertising, creating a collage of word and image that mirrors the author's artistic principle of montage. The potential customer is made a reader before he has even opened the book (cf. S. Fischer Verlag, Marbach cat. 396). - Dustjacket slightly soiled and creased, repaired. Front inner hinge split. From the estate of the Frankfurt lawyer Wilhelm A. Schaaf (1929-2015), a specialist in economic, commercial and insolvency law. - WG 24. Huguet 63. Raabe/Hannich-B. 58. 23. Schauer II, 125 (ill.).

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Georg Salter (illustrator). First Edition. Extremely rare copy of the first edition in first issue dustwrapper. The book itself is one of the highlights of European modernism and it comes wrapped in one of the most famous and elusive of dustwrappers. In the original smooth, light grey linen, lettered in red and ruled in yellow. Minor superficial bumping and rubbing to the sensitive cloth, but clean and sound. One ownership signature on front free endpaper. The dustwrapper is complete except for a patch 2-3 sq. cms at the top of the rear panel next to the spine. At some point the wrapper has been folded (presumably to protect it) and there are creases horizontally along the middle and vertically down the spine panel. Edges are rubbed and a few minor neatly closed nicks to head and tail. Despite some vague overall grubbiness, the wrapper is substantially intact and the front panel - which is where the design is - is complete and shows well. Adverts for 5 books by Doblin on the 2 flaps, including for 'Berge, Meere und Giganten' on front flap, identifying this as a first issue wrapper. Scans sent on request. [WG #24. EA in OLn u. mit OU. Sehr selten].

Fine in near fine dust jackets, in very good pictorial matching card slipcase. The grey top stain is un-faded as well. The slipcase has a chip at upper left-hand corner of pictorial label, along with traces of shelf-wear, while remaining perfectly serviceable. ) One of the masterpieces of literature in the Twentieth Century. Favorably compared to Joyce. The definitive novel of life between the wars in Weimar. Adapted as a film three times. You could wait a long time before finding a better copy. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

8vo, pp. 460, [1]; light browning, but otherwise a very good copy in the original printed wrappers, spine lightly discoloured and worn, in a folding cloth box. With a punning signed presentation inscription to front endleaf, perhaps addressed to a female fellow-drinker in Paris: 'Hommage respectueux à Mlle Bouvoirde! Alfred Döblin, Paris, 23.XII.36'. If this is a word-play on 'bavarde' (she who talks too much) and 'buveuse' (she who drinks too much) it is an apt inscription in a copy of the often alcohol fuelled story of Franz Biberkopf. Döblin's masterpiece, Berlin Alexanderplatz was widely successful and assured the author's fame around the world when it was published in the original German in 1929, the year of the world depression which constituted a decisive factor in Hitler's rise to power. In 1933, as the author was leaving Germany, it appeared in French translation our copy states 'sixième édition' on the title page but was published in June 1933, a testimony to the popularity of the book in France. In 1980 the German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder made a 15½ hour long film adaptation of the novel starring Günter Lamprecht and Hanna Schygulla, which was initially shown as a 14-part series on German television but later gained a cult following as the longest narrative film ever made.

Hardcover. Zustand: gut. 2005.
