Thick quarto. [4], 992, 277, [3]pp. Printed in two columns. Expert restoration repairing tears with minor losses to OT *2 and A1 and NT A2 and Mm4. Contemporary calf over bevelled wooden boards, early marbled endpapers, rebacked to style, spine with raised bands in six compartments The second Saur bible: the second edition of the first bible in a European language to be published in America. Sauer's text of the Luther translation was largely based on the Halle Bible, but with the addition of the appendix to the Apocrypha with books 3 and 4 Esdras and 3 Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg version. When first published in 1743, Saur's bible was the first bible in a European language to be published in America and just the second Bible printed in America after John Eliot's Indian Bibles of the 1660s. The present edition, rumored to have been issued in 2000 copies, was printed by Christopher Saur II, son of Christoph Saur the elder. Erstausgabe
Zustand: Very Good. Argenorati [i.e. Strasbourg]: Ioannem Schottum [Johann Schott], 1535. First Thus. Thick octavo (6.75" x 5"); full contemporary parchment, faint manuscript spine titling, all edges stained dark red; [26],1008 [i.e. 1009],[11]pp. ([*]8 a-z8 A-2S8 2T4).; contemporaneously hand-colored title page printed within engraved border, hand-colored full-page woodcut facing p. 804, woodcut initials throughout (all hand-colored), text printed in double column within unusual verdigris green ruling. Imprint found on final leaf of text only. Parchment darkened, especially at spine, faint pencil call number of the now-defunct New Rochelle College to front free endpaper verso, old repair to gutter edges of first three leaves, early 20th-century typescript ex libris to rear pastedown of a "Mr. H. Field, Gothic House" in Botley, Oxford, small printed excerpt on the biblical scholar Jerome mounted to front fee endpaper, extensive and erudite annotations in an early (1656) hand throughout, else a Very Good, possibly unique copy of this work. Early Lutheran Bible published by Johann Schott (1477-1548), son of one of the city's earliest printers, Martin Schott. Schott fils assumed control of the family firm in 1500, publishing about two hundred titles by the end of his career, including religious works, botanical treatises, maps, and atlases. At the time of publication Strasbourg had become a major hub of the Protestant Reformation, reflected by the output of the city's publishing houses. Scholar Myriam U. Chrisman's survey of 5700 titles published in Strasbourg between 1480 and 1599 found more than a thousand titles devoted to Protestantism. Indeed, the bibliographer of the Jacob Le Long "Bibliotheca Sacra" (1783) squarely states that it can be assumed that this Bible is Lutheran simply by having been published in Argenorati (the Latinate for Strasbourg). Even Philip Melanchthon, Martin Luther's collaborator, owned a copy, which he annotated extensively. Of special note, however, is the unusual printing of the text within green ruling not seen in any other copy we could track down, including that of the Bavarian State Library which has been completely digitized. Additional searches of other Schott works that may feature the green lines also bear no fruit, though the British Museum's twenty-nine holdings include works with equally elaborate woodcut illustrations, some with dramatic red tone blocks or chiaroscuro bordering. Additionally, this copy has been expertly hand-colored, if not at time of publication then shortly thereafter, including blocks of color to the thousand or so initials throughout the text. Notwithstanding the bibliographical oddities of this copy, this edition is rare in its own right, with none in the trade as of December, 2022. OCLC locates numerous copies throughout Europe but just two in the United States, at the American Bible Society and the Morgan (no entry mentioning the green lines). Missed by Darlow & Moule.

380 x 240 mm. (15 x 9 1/2"). 6 p.l., 266, 185, 130, [25] leaves. IMPOSING 20TH CENTURY MODELLED AND INCISED CALF over bevelled wooden boards BY ERNST RÜCKERT (signed with his monogram), upper cover with floral frame surrounding a naïvely rendered scene of a hunter on horseback blowing a horn, a shield with the binder's initials in the foreground, and brass corner guards; lower cover with brass central boss and corner guards, raised bands, blind-tooled titling, two brass clasps, handmade endpapers. In a sturdy yellow drop-front archival box. With copper-engraved allegorical illustrated title page and 145 woodcuts in the text after designs by Jakob Mores. Not in Darlow & Moule. â Text washed and pressed, evenly (and inoffensively) browned throughout, isolated trivial imperfections, but a clean and pleasing copy in a binding that looks brand new. The last of six editions of the Lutheran Bible produced between 1711 and 1750 by Luneburg publisher Cornelius Johann Stern, this impressive tome features woodcuts designed for a 16th century Bible and a modern German binding with a distinctly Medieval feel. In addition to the Bible, the text here includes the Augsburg Confession, which sets out the basic doctrines of the Lutheran Church. The woodcuts were created by artist and goldsmith Jakob Mores of Hamburg (ca. 1540-1612), and were originally used in the Wolder Bible of 1596. The binding is the work of Ernst Rückert of Hanau, Hesse, Germany, of whom very little is known. The scene on our cover--depicting a man in vaguely Medieval dress on horseback, blowing a hunting horn, with fir trees in the background and a large sun emanating rays from the upper right corner--is executed by a technique that combines blind tooling or incising with the raised, modelled leather bindings of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The decoration is charming, and the overall effect is of a folkloric style. We have only been able to locate one other binding by Rückert in sales records, on an incunabular edition of Rolewinck's "Fasciculus Temporum.".

Decorative initials. In 1743, Christoph Saur (1693-1758), printed the first Bible in a European language (German) in America. 1,200 copies were printed in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Twenty years later, in 1763, a second edition of 2,000 copies (our copy) was printed by Saur's son Christoph (1721-1784). This was the first Bible printed in America on American-made paper. A third edition appeared in 1776 (3,000 copies), which was the first Bible printed from American-made type (see Darlow & Moule 4240). Spine and covers rubbed. One clasp missing. Front free endpaper detached but present. Back hinge starting. Upper margin of pages trimmed with sporadic and minor loss of captions. Title page darkened, and slightly foxed and chipped at corners. About the publisher: Christoph Saur II (1721-1784) became an elder in the Dunkers (modern Church of the Brethren) and would neither take an oath or bear arms. During the American Revolutionary War, Saur was arrested as a spy and, despite the long feud of the Saurs with Muhlenberg, appealed to General Peter Muhlenberg, the son of the pastor. Peter Muhlenberg (1746-1787) interceded with Washington and saved his life. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the pacifist Saur was treated poorly. His neighbors seized his property. Saur ended his life in poverty, earning income by binding books.

Early ms. note on front pastedown: Collegiatum in Seekirchen and modern stamp of the collegiate library of Seekirchen (Austria) on verso of t-p. An excellent, fine copy and extremely well-preserved. A.e.r. Second edition of this Catholic bible in German language, which was translated by Kaspar Ulenberg (1549 1617). Ulenberg was a Catholic convert and a prolific theological writer, who studied theology at Wittenberg. While studying Luther s writings there, his first doubts as to the truth of the Lutheran doctrines were awakened, and were then increased by hearing the disputes between the Protestant theologians and by the appearance of Calvinism in Saxony. One day he was then sent by his family to Cologne to convert to Protestantism a relative of his who had become Catholic. After accomplishing this task he remained in Cologne, where, through some Catholic friendships, he had an opportunity of becoming acquainted with Catholic life and teaching. In 1572 he became a Catholic, and soon afterwards, upon obtaining degrees in philosophy at the University of Cologne, he laboured zealously by preaching and catechetical exercises, and made many conversions. This work is his last and most important literary achievement, which he began around 1614 at the request of the Archbishop and Elector of Cologne, Ferdinand Duke of Bavaria, and finished shortly before his death. The first edition appeared at Cologne in 1630; eleven other editions were published at Cologne up to 1747, and eleven more at Nuremberg, Bamberg, Frankfort, and Vienna. The present work bears the armorial shield of the Austrian Cardinal Maximilian Gandolph von Künburg (1622-1687), who was nephew to the famous Cardinal Wolfgang Hanibal von Schrattenbach. Maximilian established the monastery of Seekirchen am Wallersee in Austria, a town in the Salzburg lake district, in 1679 and one can suppose this bible was donated by him to the collegiate library of the monastery, since in bears the date of foundation stamped on its front cover. Not in Darlow-Moule and the bibles catalogue of the Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Stuttgart. This Bible, first published in 1630, far outstripped all previous Catholic translations in terms of both greater correctness and linguistic versatility (Wetzer-W., XII, 188).

leather. Zustand: Good. [2], [1]-1189, [1], [1]-398 pages [lacking 2 leaves at rear]. Measures 22 x 14 cm; 8.75 x 5.5 inches. A well preserved and foundational memento of Ferdinand Conrad Temme's sojourn as the third pastor of the Lunenburg Lutheran congregation. With receipt for the purchase of this Bible: 5 schillings paid to Johann Nicolaus Kaulbach, signed and dated December 1819 on verso of title page. A distinguished career of pedagogy in his homeland was interrupted by Napoleonic invasion from which he fled to Pennsylvania to serve as a pastor, from whence he was called to fill a vacancy in Lunenburg: "I reluctantly accepted this call, for reasons to myself to this day unaccountable and unknown, and on the 5th of February, 1808, commenced the voyage to this Siberia of America. On the 28th of April in the same year, I first trod the soil of Nova Scotia, at 2 o'clock at night." [D. Luther Roth: Acadie and the Acadians, 369f.] Recognizing the need for his congregations to have access to biblical study aids Temme was instrumental in writing and having printed teachings specifically for those in his care [see Roth p.374ff]. Full leather with early sewn repairs to hinges and foot of spine. Leather on spine and inner hinges recently and professinally stabilized retaining all original elements. One blank endpaper at front, none at rear. Lacking twenty verses of the final chapter of Revelation: the last complete verse present is Revelation 21:1 [a complete bible ends with Rev. 21:21]. Very little staining, generally a clean age-toned interior.

gehouden tot Dordrecht inde Jaren 1618 ende 1619. . Te Dordrecht: Jacob en Hendrik Keur 1741. Thick folio. Orig. full blind-embossed diced calf with orig. brass clasps and corner protectors over heavy bevelled wooden boards. Spine extremities skilfully strengthened. Comprising engrv. illust title-page text in a black gothic type printed in multiple columns and 6 folding double-page maps including one of the two world hemispheres. Complete with the Apocryphe at end. NOTE: The States-General Staten Generael instructed the Synod of Dordrecht with the translation of the Bible into the Dutch language at a special meeting in 1618. This task was completed in 1637 and a contemp. print of the occasion is loosely inserted with the Bible. Just as the 'Luther Bible' as well as the 'King James Bible' had a major influence on both the literature and art of both Germany and England so the 'Statenbijbel' as this became known had a major effect on the Dutch poets writers and culture in Holland with artists such as Rembrandt being inspired by biblical motives. A fine example of early Dutch binding albeit with some restoration.
