Signed limited first edition of Woolfâ s immensely popular feminist classic, one of only 800 copies signed by her in her characteristic purple ink. Octavo, original publisher's cloth decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, engraved frontispiece portrait of Orlando as a boy, illustrated with engravings. One of 800 copies signed by Woolf on the verso of the half-title page. Typography by Frederic Warde. In fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box made by the Harcourt Bindery. Easily one of the nicest we have seen. Woolf is considered to be one of the greatest twentieth century novelists and one of the pioneers among modernist writers using stream of consciousness as a narrative device. Following her 1912 marriage to Leonard Woolf, the couple founded the Hogarth Press in 1917, which published much of her work. Arguably one of Woolf's most popular novels, Orlando describes the adventures of a poet who changes sex from man to woman and lives for centuries, meeting the key figures of English literary history. Considered a feminist classic, the book has been written about extensively by scholars of women's writing and gender and transgender studies and has been adapted a number of times for stage and screen.

Crosby Gaige's publishing firm was a pioneer in publishing modern literature in fine-press editions. Kirkpatrick A11a; see Woolmer 185. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, publisher's device to front cover in gilt, cream endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Woolf, Virginia (1882-1940) ORLANDO A Biography. New York: Crosby Gaige, 1928. First edition. Limited edition. Np. 671 of 861 copies printed on rag paper and SIGNED by the author in purple ink on verso of the half-title. 8vo, 22.5 x 16 cm. Original black cloth, spine decorated in gilt, publisher's device gilt to front board, top edge gilt, light ubbing to head of spine, awesome light dust soiling including to top of rear board, minor corner bumping, some light toning. Bookplate of Rollin Oliver Glaser to front paste-down, u,.r. corner title page excision to margin only. [Kirkpatrick A11a] The true first edition, preceding the Hogarth Press edition by nine days. Virginia Woolf's "Orlando: A Biography" is a novel first published in 1928. The book is a fictional biography that spans four centuries, tracing the life of the protagonist Orlando, a nobleman who mysteriously transforms into a woman. The novel is often described as a work of feminist and queer literature because it explores issues of gender identity and sexuality. "Orlando" is famous for its experimental form and is considered one of Woolf's most accessible and entertaining works. The novel was groundbreaking in its treatment of gender and has been the subject of various interpretations and academic studies. The book was also notable because it was inspired by Woolf's relationship with Vita Sackville-West, a fellow writer and member of the Bloomsbury Group. Sackville-West's inability to inherit her family estate, Knole House, due to her gender, is thought to have been a significant influence on the novel.

Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Rare, good. Octavo. Orange cloth, lettered in gilt. 300pp. 8 â x 5½ in. White dust jacket printed in black. The jacket reproduces an unidentified portrait from the Worthing Art Gallery. Frontispiece and seven black and white photographic plates. Index. Spine lightly sunned, else a near fine copy in a dusty dust jacket with a triangular piece missing from the lower edge where it is creased; at some point a copy of a dust jacket was made and the missing piece was slipped in behind the panel to complete the wrapper, but not permanently affixed. Dust jackets in any condition on this edition are rare, and none currently found in commerce by this cataloguer. From the library of James Strohn Copley, with his bookplate. First English edition, first impression; published 11 October 1928, 5080 copies printed, 9s. Dedication to V. Sackville West. In an excess of emotion, Woolf wrote to her dearest friend, Vita, "dipped my pen in the ink, and wrote these words, as if automatically, on a clean sheet: Orlando: A Biography. No sooner had I done this than my body was flooded with rapture and my brain with ideas. I wrote rapidly till 12. Then I did an hour to Romance. So every morning I am going to write fiction (my own fiction) till 12; and Romance till 1. But listen; suppose Orlando turns out to be Vita; and its all about you and the lusts of your flesh and the lure of your mind [ . ] suppose, I say, that Sibyl next October says 'Theres Virginia gone and written a book about Vita' [ . ] Shall you mind? Say yes, or No: Your excellence as a subject arises largely from your noble birth." - 9th Oct. [1927] V. W. to V. Sackville West. "To this letter Vita replied on 11 October: 'My God, Virginia, if ever I was thrilled and terrified it is at the prospect of being projected into the shape of Orlando. What fun for you; what fun for me. . . . You have my full permission. Only I think that having drawn and quartered me, unwound and retwisted me, or whatever it is that you intend to do, you ought to dedicate it to your victim' (Berg). Virginia did." Nicolson, The Letters of Virginia Woolf, Volume III: 1923 - 1928, 428-429pp. . WOOLMER 185. KIRKPATRICK A11b.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. Illustrated with eight black and white photographs of "Orlando", including a frontispiece of "Orlando as a Boy". ***Very good in orange cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still quite bright but the spine is somewhat darkened and slightly marked. Whilst the boards show some marks and discolouration commensurate with age and handling, there is no damage to the cloth. There are a couple of very slight creases to the board edges, and a couple of small stains to the back board. There is also a small area of fading to the bottom corner of the back board. The corners are sharp and not bumped. There is no reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges clean with none of the usual foxing. Internally the book is also very good, with a contemporary ownership name and date (Oct 1928) at the top of the front free endpaper. There is a small 1cm split to the paper at the front gutter, but the hinges are fine. There is none of the usual foxing - just some offsetting to the endpapers. There are no creases or tears and the pages are beautifully clean. The paper stock is very lightly tanned. No dustwrapper. ***224mm x 148mm. 299 pages including 'fictional' Index at the back of the book. ***'"Orlando: A Biography" is a novel disguised as a biography, first published on 11th October 1928. The book was inspired by the tumultuous family history of Virginia Woolf's lover and close friend, the aristocratic poet and novelist Vita Sackville-West. The book describes the adventures of a poet who changes sex from man to woman, and lives for centuries, meeting the key figures of English literary history. Considered a feminist classic, the book has been written about extensively by scholars of women's writing, gender and trans-gender studies. ***First impression of the true first edition, in its original cloth-covered boards, in very good condition for its age (now approaching 100 years old!). The book is notoriously prone to fading of the boards, and tears to the fragile cloth at the spine, but this copy is very robust and only moderately marked on the boards, with very little fading. The interior is exceptionally clean (please see scans). Of interest to collectors of the literary outputs of the Bloomsbury Group, The Hogarth Press and the work of Virginia Woolf. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Facsimile Dustjacket. Vanessa Bell (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. ORLANDO - has been acclaimed as one of the finest examples of Virginia Woolf's literary brilliance. In this book, Mrs. Woolf has created a character who begins as an Elizabethan nobleman and ends as a twentieth-century Lady. Orlando is first seen growing up in the family castle in the days of Queen Elizabeth. The book ends with its hero-heroine at the age of thirty-six, a modern woman. - A semi-biographical novel based in part on the life of Woolf's intimate friend Vita Sackville-West. - Orlando is generally considered one of Woolf's most accessible novels, and was the basis for the 1992 movie, starring Tilda Swinton and Quentin Crisp. Dedicated to Vita Sackville-West [her intimate friend]. - There is one pasted in image in the book of Vita Sackville-West on the dedication page. She is about 20 years old in this image. - Three of the eight plates are photographs of Vita Sackville-West, another is of Angelica Bell [Daughter of Vanessa Bell - Virginia Woolf's sister] at the age of 9. CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The dustjacket was designed by her sister: Vanessa Bell - It was originally produced by The Hogarth Press in 1928. This is a brand new facsimile dustjacket in a superb condition. The dustjacket is printed on acid free paper and enclosed in a durable plastic archival sleeves for longevity and future protection. The original of this dustjacket was produced 95 years ago in 1928. It has the price of 9s. net to the spine as well as the "Wolf" colophon. Reddish/Orange cloth [rebind] with gilt/gold lettering to the spine. Colour to the cloth has faded in general. Unevenly soiled boards, with a few small cloth edge tears to the front top edge and spine top and bottom. All hidden by the dustjacket. Corners lightly bumped and cloth scuffed. The boards remain firmly attached to page block. All housed beneath the accompanying dustjacket. Front and rear blank endpages are adhered to the inner boards. This was often done to strengthen the page block. Browning and foxing to pages, but other than that; the pages are clean. There are 8 photographic images within and all are present. The story itself has 299 pages including the index at the rear of the book. Nice overall condition for such a rare and collectable book. - This work was described by Vita Sackville-West's son Nigel Nicholson as: "the longest and most charming love-letter in literature." - Virginia Woolf's homage to Vita Sackville-West. - Two very interesting bonus images accompany: One of Virginia Woolf when she is about 20 years old. She looks so young and beautiful. The second is an image of an old newspaper article headed: "I CANNOT GO ON" - WOMAN WRITER'S SUICIDE - At the inquest at Newhaven, Sussex, to-day, on Mrs. Virginia Woolf, whose body was recovered from the River Ouse near her home at Rodwell last night, a verdict of suicide while the balance of her mind was disturbed was returned. - Then, follows a lot more information about Virginia Woolf and her life etc. Both images are photocopies. - A sad end for such a beautiful writer. - Also have Virginia Woolf's Last will written in 1930 [2 pages] which I will include with the sale. It was only when I got a copy of this will that I saw that her first Christian name was Adeline. {Adeline Virginia Woolf} - E N D - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it.
