showing Rupert meeting a friend carrying a parcel, and being led somewhere by the friend, 4 hand-coloured panels each 3½" x 4" on card mount 13½" x 9½", vignettes of Rupert and his mother in top corners of mount, no place, Alfred Bestall took over the Daily Express stories and drawings from creator Mary Tourtel in 1935. He maintained her image of Rupert, improved the stories and expanded the backgrounds to include his beloved Snowdonia. His produced his last daily story in 1965, but he continued working on the annuals for several years. Here the pictures have that essential element - What happens next?.

Softcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Bestall, Alfred (illustrator). 1942. Good condition. Pictorial card wraps - Rupert waving from castle ramparts. Creasing to cover corners; some grubby marks. Surface paper damage to bottom half of front cover, where a sticker has been; remains of sticker. NOT price-cut. Inscription in ink to belongs to box. Erstausgabe
First edition of the fifth Daily Express Rupert Annual. Publisher's original pictorial boards. Illustrated in colour throughout. An excellent better than very good copy, the binding firm with some rubbing at the spine edges and bumping at the tips. A few light scratches to the lower board. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. There are no previous owner's inscriptions and the pages remain clean throughout. An attractive example of one of the scarcest annuals to acquire in decent original condition. This was the first of the Daily Express annuals to be released with a pictorial paper covered spine rather than the red cloth of previous editions. As such the binding is prone to heavy wear and loss. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

No tears internally, no missing pages, contents clean, light crease on p.47. 'This Belongs To' box neatly filled in, not price-clipped. In all, a very decent copy indeed of this wartime Rupert Annual.

Erstausgabe
First edition of the sixth Daily Express Rupert Annual. Publisher's original pictorial boards. Illustrated in colour throughout. A very good copy, the binding firm with some rubbing at the spine edges and bumping at the corners. The spine is slightly rolled. The contents are entirely complete and without loose or torn pages. The "This Belongs to" box has a neatly written name in it otherwise that are no previous owner's marks. A couple of pages have a single foxing spot to the lower blank margin but on the whole a clean and tidy example in entirely original condition. The fragile nature of the paper covered binding combined with poor quality war-time paper used in production dictates that the 1941 annual is one of the scarcest Ruperts to acquire anything approaching collectable condition. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
