"Such was the demand [for Tom Jones] that all 2,500 copies in print had already been sold by the date announced for its a official publication, a phenomenon that one observer believed to be 'an unheard-of case.' Buchbeschreibung: London: Printed for A. Millar, 1749., 1749. Six volumes. lxii,[2(errata)],214; [2],324; [2],370,[blank]; [2],312; [2],294; [2],304pp. 12mo. Early 20th century speckled calf, spines gilt extra, gilt labels, a.e.g. Joints a trifle rubbed, but sound, bookplate tipped in first volume, small marginal adhesion flaw to III:G12 and natural paper flaw affecting a couple letters to III:H6; small marginal spot to three leaves in vol. VI, otherwise a very good, or better, set. First edition of Fielding's masterpiece, and one of the key 18th century novels. The first edition consisted of 2000 copies, and these were virtually all spoken for prior to the formal day of publication. The copies of the first edition are distinguished, as here, by the presence of the page of errata following the table of contents in the first volume. The errata were corrected and the page taken over by the enlargement of the contents in the unmarked second edition of 1500 copies, which was ordered after the first edition was exhausted. Both editions were in circulation on the formal publication day of 28 February. This set exhibits the usual cancels and B5 in volume VI is unsigned. CROSS III:317. ROTHSCHILD 850-1. Buchbeschreibung: Printed for A. Millar,, London:, 1749. First edition. Six volumes. First issue with errata leaf in Vol. 1, errata uncorrected, and all cancels and final blanks (K12 in Vol. 1 and R12 in Vol. 3) as noted in Rothschild 850. 12mo, nineteenth-century full mottled calf by Pratt: red and black Morocco spine labels, raised bands, gilt dentelles, marbled end papers and all edges gilt. Vol. 1 rebacked with the spine laid down, other volumes with minor joint repairs, but withal an excellent, clean set. One of the earliest and most successful examples of the British novel, particularly the comedic genre. All 2,000 copies of the first printing were subscribed prior the official release, prompting two more printings in 1749. ?Tom Jones? was a best-seller in its day, which has never gone out of print; it continues to inspire and amuse readers to this day. The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling. In Six Volumes .
Buchbeschreibung: Printed for A. Millar, 1749. FIRST EDITION, 3 wood engraved tail-pieces, errata leaf present in vol. i (see note), gathering E in vol. i misbound with pp. 81-88 between 92 and 93, final blanks present in vols. i and iii, occasional slight browning, and the odd minor stain here and there, 4 leaves misbound within gathering E in vol. i, textblock in 2 vols. cracked, with corresponding cracks in spine of binding, and a similar tendency in all vols., pp. lxii, [i, Errata], 214, [2, blank]; [i], 324; [i], 324; [i], 370 plus final blank leaf; [i], 312; [i], 294; [i], 304, 12mo, contemporary (publishers) sprinkled calf, new red lettering pieces, joints cracked but cord firm, hinge of vol. vi invisibly reinforced, various bookplates and inscriptions of the Farquhars of Gilmilnescroft (Ayrshire), sound Fieldings masterpiece, widely regarded as the greatest English novel of the eighteenth century. The question of cancelled leaves in this novel has exercised bibliographers for decades, but Hugh Amorys article in Harvard Library Bulletin (Volume 25, 1977) confirms that the cancellans usually number twenty-four (twelve single leaves plus the whole of signature O in volume three). The numerous errors which occurred in the text are a result of its hasty printing; demand for the novel forced publisher and author into print before they were properly ready. The fact that volume six, which contains some of the most glaring errors, is not included in the errata suggests that not only was Millar unable to bind fast enough to keep up with demand, but also that he did not wait for either proof readers or Fielding to read the last volume. The entire first edition of 2,000 copies was immediately bought up by the London trade, necessitating a second edition very quickly. Both Cross and Jensen support the view that the second edition was in hand at about the same time as the sixth volume of the first edition went to press. The latter goes further and suggests that the second edition may even have been printed before publication of the first. The most obvious difference is that the errata leaf in volume one is omitted and the re-spaced Contents extends into the page which it formerly occupied. Cross concludes that Tom Jones, as the novel [first] appeared in February, is a most rare book. (Cross Vol.2, pp.117-22 and Vol.3, pp. 316-17: Jensen. Proposals for a Definitive Edition of Fielding's Tom Jones. The Library, 4th Ser., Vol.XVIII, p.314 et seq.: Rothschild 850). Buchnummer des Verkäufers 49946
Buchbeschreibung: A. Millar, London, 1749. Hardcover. Buchzustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Here is a lovely copy of the first edition, second printing of this seminal English novel. In the Harvard Classics volumes Gordon Gerould summarizes 'Tom Jones' thus: "As to the stupendous achievement of the novel there can be no question. Beyond all cavil it is supremely great. By the very might of its revelation of human nature it disarms criticism and tempts to the use of the superlative. The merit of it consists in the performance of what Fielding in his prefatory chapter promised to give the reader: 'The provision then which we have here made is no other than HUMAN NATURE. In like manner, the excellence of the mental entertainment consists less in the subject than in the authors skill in well dressing it up.' In other words, 'Tom Jones' is great because it pictures real men and women, and because its craftsmanship is marvelous". The second printing was issued in April 1749, two months after the first printing. Cross describes it thus: "Immediate revision was rendered imperative on account of the numerous errors that crept into the text owing to the haste with which the novel had been at last put through the press. type and paper are the same and the paging is kept uniform with the edition having the errata. The table of contents is re-spaced so as to extend into the page formerly given to the errata. scores of individual pages differ either in the number of lines or in the last words and phrases". The copy offered here is identified as a second printing by the following specific bibliographic points. Volume I lacks the errata slip, and the table of contents expands to fill the previously unnumbered page with page xliii. The errata listed in the first printing are corrected. The first printing cancels are not present at II(N12), III(H8, H9,H10, M3 & Q11), and V(N8). Vols II and IV have the second printing free endpapers. This copy is in very good plus condition. The original calf boards have been retained with professional rebacking, which has reused the original red leather title panels. Each volume has the bookplate of Douglas Maxwell Moffat to the front pastedown. Moffat (1881-1956) was the U.S.Ambassador to Australia, appointed by President Eisenhower in February 1956, just a few months before his death. There are a few pencil notations to the pastedowns. Otherwise the contents are exceptionally nice - clean and undamaged with no foxing. A previous bookseller has pasted an inaccurate description to the rear pastedown of volume one. Buchbeschreibung: London: Printed for A. Millar, 1749., 1749. Four volumes. xx,304; viii,330; x,288; xii,347pp. Full green crushed levant, raised bands, t.e.g., richly gilt red morocco doublures, silk and marbled endsheets, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Binding extremities sunned to tan, otherwise a fine, tall (18 cm) set, though most likely washed when bound. Although not so identified, the third edition, and the first in four volumes. Cross asserts that this edition prints Fielding's final revisions, although other informed sources assert they first appeared in the fourth edition. The edition consisted of 3000 sets, and the text was set up from a corrected copy of the first edition and cast in a smaller font. This is an interesting set (apart from being untrimmed), elegantly bound by Chambolle-Duru, and extra-illustrated with the following material a) twelve engraved plates (each in two states, uncolored before letters and hand-colored) by Moreau the Younger; b) ten impressions before captions of plates engraved by Hubert and others after drawings by Borel; and c) eight original watercolors, in sepia, white and black, captioned in pencil and signed "Levasseur." The edition illustrated by Moreau appeared in Paris in 1833, and that by Borel in "Londres" in 1801 (see Vicaire III:703). Benezit offers several possible identifications for Levasseur, though none particularly conclusive. However, 19th century auction records report editions of the French translations of this text extra-illustrated with original drawings or watercolors with the same attribution. CROSS III:317. Marbled paper covered boards and marbled endpapers. Top edges are gilt. Minor chips on a few spine ends. Includes: History of Tom Jones; Amelia; Adventures of Joseph Andrews; Life of Late Mr. Jonathan Wild; and Miscellaneous Writings. Henry Fielding ( Sharpham, 22 April 1707 - near Lisbon, 8 October 1754) was an English novelist and dramatist known for his rich earthy humour and satirical prowess, and as the author of the novel Tom Jones. Aside from his literary achievements, he has a significant place in the history of law-enforcement, having founded (with his half-brother John) what some have called London' s first police force, the Bow Street Runners, using his authority as a magistrate. Fielding never stopped writing political satire and satires of current arts and letters. Fielding took to writing novels in 1741 and his first major success was Shamela, an anonymous parody of Richardson's melodramatic novel. It is a satire that follows the model of the famous Tory satirists of the previous generation (Jonathan Swift and John Gay, in particular). He followed this up with Joseph Andrews (1742), an original work supposedly dealing with Pamela's brother, Joseph.[3] Although begun as a parody, this work developed into an accomplished novel in its own right and is considered to mark Fielding's debut as a serious novelist.
