Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. The Great She Bible, the authorized version or King James Bible, one of the greatest monuments of English literature. This edition is known as the She Bible for the reading She went into the citie in Ruth 3:15. In this copy he error Judas for Jesus in Matthew 26:36 is corrected with a pasted-on slip. Fry styles this the first edition, second issue, though it is more properly the second edition. The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611. Probably the greater part of the book was printed in 1611, but the publication, for some reason or other, was delayed till 1613. . . . Smith suggests [the delay resulted from] an accident in the printing-office which destroyed a large number of sheets (Herbert). One of the masterpieces of the English language, the King James Bible is surely the greatest literary work ever created by committee. In the preface, Miles Smith, one of the dozens of translators, commented on the importance of the work: Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light; that breaketh the shell, that we may eat the kernel; that putteth aside the curtain, that we may look into the most Holy place; that removeth the cover of the well, that we may come by the water. Folio. Contemporary calf over oak boards, brass fittings, rebacked and expertly restored. Some staining and edge wear with preliminaries restored, rare engraved map of the Holy Land, supplied. A very good copy of one of the most sought-after books in the English language, rarely seen complete and in the classic period binding of calf over oak boards. Complete copies of this Bible in early bindings are among the most sought-after books in the English language. Printing and the Mind of Man 114. Herbert 319.

Note: Arguably the most important book ever published in English in one of only two hundred surviving copies. Its influence can best be summed up by G.M. Trevelyan who stated that "for every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser, or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe, there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character, imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come, was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals, or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine." Macaulay said of it, If everything else in our language should perish, [the King James Bible] would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power (PMM 114). • Rare 1613 folio edition of the great King James "She" Bible", "theÂtrue 1613 folio edition of King James'ÂBible; easily distinguishable fromÂtheÂother large folio editions by its smaller type. TheÂpreliminary leaves are set up as inÂtheÂother large folio editions, butÂtheÂtext is printed in smaller type with 72 instead of 59 lines toÂthe full column" (Herbert; Darlow & Moule). From the library of famed collector Alfred Sutro and decorated with a large fore-edge painting by John T. Beer.ÂFolio, bound in full 19th century paneled calf rebacked with older spine labels preserved, gilt tiles and ruling to the spine in seven compartments within raised banes, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, inner dentelles elaborately stamped in blind, marbled endpapers, text in two columns, 72 lines, black letter, titles within elaborate historiated woodcut borders featuring the twelve tribes, woodcut initials & headpieces, with the opening calendar printed in red and black, the genealogies, and apocrypha, engraved double-page map of theÂHoly Land by More & Speed, extra-illustrated with 43 engravings by Beilby & Bewick from Ostervald's BibleÂ(Newcastle, 1782) bound atÂthe appropriate chapter and verse. A4 B4 C6 D4 2A-4M6 4N4 plus A-C6 (Speed's Genealogies inserted before OT). Decorated with a large disappearing fore-edge painting by John T. Beer depicting two scenes: "Caleb's daughter pleading for a watered land" and "Christ at the Well of Sychar." With the erroneous phrase found in the first issue â and he went into the citieâ in Ruth 3:15 corrected to â â ¦she wentâ ¦â Provenance: John T. Beer (1826-1903, fore-edge painting and his sale, Nov 12, 1903, lot 249 sold to William Ridler, bookseller); Alfred Sutro (1869-1945, bookplate); sold to another private collection, 1976. Exhibition: Museum and Gallery, Bob Jones University, Greenville, SC, 2016-2023. Noted collector and early President of the Book Club of California Alfred Sutro commissioned a pamphlet from the Grabhorn Press in 1938 to celebrate this volume. Darlow & Moule 249; Herbert 322; Weber Beer 29. In very good condition with corner repairs to first 15 and final 4 leaves (incl. loss of 2 letters on A2v), corner creasing and a small ink stain to OT title, map laid down and with losses along edges and of lower corners, final leaf trimmed, laid down and with loss of a few letters, front free endpaper started, gift inscription. An exceptionally rare, complete and unique example of perhaps the most influential text in the English language. "From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5, the King James version reigned without rival" (Herbert 319). One of the most influential texts in the English language, Thomas Macaulay anointed it "a book, which if everything else in our language should perish, would alone suffice to show the whole extent of its beauty and power" (PMM 114). The official work of translation was undertaken by nearly 50 scholars over the span of 1604 to 1611, but it can be seen as the culmination of nearly a century of work, beginning with William Tyndale's New Testament translations, and including the bibles of Coverdale and Whitchurch, the Bishops' Bible, the Geneva Bible, and the Rheims New Testament. "Appointed to be read in Churches," the Great "He" Bible was exposed to public usage (on lecterns) and almost all surviving copies have suffered some manner of damage or loss.

TheÂ"She"ÂBibleÂis Fryâ s â first edition, second issueâ ofÂtheÂKing JamesÂBible, commonly known asÂtheÂAuthorized Version, undoubtedlyÂtheÂmost influential of all English language versions ofÂtheÂBible.ÂTheÂfirst edition is known to exist in two issues,ÂtheÂGreat "He"ÂBibleÂandÂtheÂGreat "She"ÂBible.ÂTheÂaccepted first issue ofÂtheÂBibleÂhadÂtheÂreading in Ruth 3:15,".and he went intoÂtheÂcitie," and inÂtheÂaccepted second issue,ÂtheÂpassage reads correctly ".andÂsheÂwent intoÂthe citie.â The second issue also contains the error "Judas" for "Jesus" in Matthew XXVI, which has been corrected in a contemporary hand in this example. Lacking 9 preliminary leaves of 17, and 34 leaves of the New Testament. ESTC S124527; Herbert 319. In very good condition. "From about the middle of the seventeenth century until the appearance of the Revised Bible of 1881-5, the King James' version reigned without rival" (Herbert 319). (A3 bound backwards). Title page, the 2 leaves of the engraved map, and the final 2 leaves in excellent facsimile. Additional title page from a later edition bound in behind the facsimile. Gothic and Roman types, text double column with 59 lines per column and printed within woodcut rule-border, calendar and almanac printed in red and black. General title-page within engraved border by Christian Boel and section title for the New Testament dated 1611 within woodcut border. Full-sheet engraved map of the Holy Land by John Speed after Dr John More, 17 leaves of genealogical tables incorporating woodcut illustrations of Adam and Eve, Noah's Ark, the Tower of Babel and other Biblical subjects, numerous woodcut head- and tail-pieces, historiated and ornamental initials. Contemporary calf boards, rebacked, spine labels; some staining, a few leaves with small holes or edges torn away, but generally a very good copy. With a notation on the paste-down that the book was "received of William Biggs for the sum of 5 shillings . by me John Lang. Ford Warminster" dated 1747 and with a small but elaborate bookplate of W[illiam] T[homas] Smedley (1858-1920), the noted collector of Elizabethaniana and Bacon; his library was sold in 1924 to Henry Clay Folger, and the Folger library collection today includes nearly 1500 volumes formerly owned by Smedley. "ARGUABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT BOOK EVER PUBLISHED IN ENGLISH". First edition, second issue/state, called the "she" Bible (because of the reading of Ruth III, 15: "she went into the citie"). In addition, because of the small hole in C6 (Matthew 26:36) it is impossible to tell whether the word Judas or Jesus is printed. The King James version of the Holy Bible is arguably the most important book ever published in English. Preparation of the Royal Version took more than 5 years and was laboriously attended to by over 50 translators and researchers. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed, reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale, Coverdale, Geneva and Bishops' Bibles, it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. Herbert 309; Pforzheimer 62; PMM 114; STC 2217.

Boards elaborately tooled in blind with silver clasps, center- and cornerpieces. Spines with five raised bands, compartments tooled in blind, and titles and dates lettered in gilt. Calf doublures. Gilt-stamped vellum endpapers. All edges gilt and gauffered. Condition: Pages crisp, clean and bright with minimal toning and spotting in a handful of places (e.g. lower margin of title page); printed on thick paper; bookplate of John William Pease to front endpapers; bookplate of D.B. to rear endpapers; blank leaf with manuscript records of Sherard family at front of prayer book. Provenance: The Sherard family (manuscript leaf and crest to centerpieces) John William Pease (1836 1901) by descent to the heirs of Wardington; offered at Sotheby s Wardington Library sale, 2006. The Sherard family was an important aristocratic family. Robert Sherard inherited the peerage from his father, Philip Sherard. Robert was also known as the 6th Earl of Harborough, styled Lord Sherard. Robert never married, instead having a long-term relationship with a married woman, the actress Emma Sarah Calcroft Kennedy. His library was sold in London by Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge on 9 June 1864. Note: The last printing of the Bishops Bible and, as the note in Herbert puts it, presumably [the one] used by the King James translators in their work. Robert Barker, who held the patent for printing the Bishops Bible, provided 40 unbound copies of the 1602 edition for the project. This edition resembles the 1611 King James Bible in form and text more than any other. When Charles II became king in 1660, the Book of Common Prayer regained popularity, sparking debates over its content between Presbyterian divines and the Church of England. Charles established a Royal Commission comprising twelve bishops appointed by the state and twelve other divines and tasked with reviewing and suggesting changes. This led to the Savoy Conference, where approximately six hundred sections were revised. On May 19, 1662, Charles approved these changes, and the updated book was published. It remained largely unchanged for the next 300 years. References: Bible - Herbert 271; STC 2188; ESTC S122093; Luborsky 2188. Book of Common Prayer Wing B3622; ESTC R3118; USTC 3079367.

Complete preliminaries with Calendar and Almanac printed in red and black. The Bible text is complete, and each chapter begins with a woodcut initial. Most consider the fifth folio the finest in the series of pulpit folios (Brake 201). DESCRIPTION: General title page (1640) in expert facsimile featuring the Tetragrammaton above, the Agnus Dei and the Holy Dove, with Matthew and Mark on either side; on the left side are the tents of the twelve tribes and on the right side the twelve apostles; below the letterpress are the Lamb slain along with Luke and John and a the bottom a tablet with the word Cum Privilegio. COLLATION: A-B^4 , C^6, D^4 (prelims); A-Z^6, Aa-Zz^6, Aaa-Zzz^6, Aaaa-Zzzz^6, Aaaaa-Zzzzz^6, Aaaaaa-Dddddd^6 (Bible text). 732 ff. Complete with general title page in facsimile. CONDITION: Thick paper with good margins throughout. A2 of prelims with some closed tears and paper repairs without loss; A-C (prelims-Exodus) with marginal staining, at first more prevalent but gradually improving; Ll6 three-inch closed tear without loss; New Testament title page with very light staining; Ss1 small piece torn off reducing side note verso; Zzzzz3-4 repair to upper fore-edge reducing headlines; Aaaaaa4, Bbbbbb1 remargined; Bbbbbb2-6 remargined with occasional loss of side notes but not impacting text; Dddddd6 recornered, lightly stained. The small above-mentioned faults notwithstanding, this is a very nice copy of the large black letter folio with crisp pages and good margins. NOTE: The 1611 King James Bible was printed in a 59-line folio format in 1611, 1613, 1617, 1634, and in 1640/39. The 1611 He Bible constituted a distinct edition with the reading and hee went into the citie in Ruth 3:15. The second edition She Bible was printed in subsequent years with the variant and she went into the citie. The second edition is frequently found in a variant state with leaves mixed in from different years. It is likely that the bulk of the sheets were printed in 1613 and stacked in the printing house with She Bibles gathered together as orders came in. Thus, while the date is 1640 on the general title page, the bulk of the leaves could have been printed as early as 1613. REFERENCES: Herbert 543; USTC 3021270; ESTC S90554; Drake, Donald. Title-page within border, red ruled throughout, signed A-F8, G4. Pagination: [x], 91, [3] complete. Paper flaw in margin C4; short tear without loss D1; printer's ink blot F2 partly obscuring one word. [STC 1198]. Anonymous round wood-engraved armorial with the head of a bull and the motto 'Non Nobis Nati' (Born not for ourselves) to front pastedown. Upper inner hinge splitting with some surface loss but holding strongly on cords, tips of corners bumped and rubbed, some slight surface cracking of spine, lacking ties. A later issue of the so-called Wicked Bible, first published by Robert Barker in the same year, this copy with 'not' reinstated. "Nearly all (copies of Bibles of this date) differ in parts from one another, but probably the majority are mixed copies" (Darlow & Moule/edited by A.S. Herbert 449). This issue has the error at Exodus XX.14 ("Though shalt not commit adultery") corrected, and the other points mentioned. *The tools of this binding, especially the scroll and "yin yang" foliate device, can be attributed to Nixon's "Squirrel Binder", who was active from 1610-1635 working for English nobles and members of the royal court, including James I and Charles I; he has also been identified as being Lord Herbert's and John Bill's binder (Mirjam Foot). The Squirrel Binder produced marvellous bindings in the style of sixteenth-century French bindings "à la fanfare." In addition to the sixteen bindings recorded by Nixon, Mirjam Foot records another 37 examples from the same shop, of which at least sixteen were made for the royal family ("Lord Herbert and the Squirrel Binder", The Henry Davis Gift, i, pp.51-58). The tooling on this binding includes several distinct examples, most notably the scroll and seven petal floral devices, which can be most closely matched with another devotional volume bound by the Squirrel Binder in the British Library (The Booke of Common Prayer, 1607, also bound with Bible and Psalter), which forms part of the Henry Davis Gift (Shelfmark Davis 97). Similarly, both books also display the traces of silk ties. As Nixon points out, the accounts of the Earl of Northumberland reference to 'Bill, the bookbinder' should not be taken "as conclusive evidence that he had his own binding staff working on his premises", but given the frequency with which John Bill is associated, as publisher, with attributed Squirrel Binder examples one has to wonder if Bill commissioned bindings for presentation, or perhaps even for sale on the market as luxury copies. H.M. Nixon in 1970, "English Bookbindings 62: A London Binding by the Squirrel Binder, c. 1620", The Book Collector, Spring 1970.

Unobtrusive repairs to endpapers at gutters. Browning and edgewear to endpapers. Bookplate to inside front board, printed in red & black, dated 1962. The first black letter quarto edition of the King James Bible, a close reprint of the 1611 first edition, retaining several first edition printing errors, including 'Emorite' in Genesis X.16 and the famous 'he' (rather than 'she') misprint in Ruth III.15: volumes with this rare first edition point are known as 'He' Bibles. Both the 1611 first edition and this volume omit the word 'Appointed' from the title. 'This and many subsequent issues were produced in close imitation of those black-letter quarto editions of the Geneva Bible which had proved so popular' (Darlow & Moule). Authorised text with Apocrypha. With John Speed's 'The genealogies recorded in the Sacred Scriptures' (n.d.; likely 1611 or 1612) bound in to front, and the 1615 'Two right profitable and fruitfull concordances' bound in to rear. Genealogies has 'A description of Canaan, and the bordering countries' with a double-page woodcut map, but is lacking one leaf, pp. 23-24 (sig. D1). Bible has separate engraved title pages for Old and New Testaments, both dated 1613; register is continuous. Titles enclosed within heart-shaped frame inside a woodcut border representing the tents and shields of the 12 tribes, the 12 apostles, and the 4 evangelists. Decorative initials, head-pieces, and tail-pieces. Bible printed in double-column black letter. No pagination except to Genealogies. Moderate soiling and age-darkening, and some mild foxing, throughout. In Genealogies: tear to top p. 21 (3cm), hole to p. 25 (c. 2cm). In OT and NT: hole to sig. B3 (c. 4cm), hole to sig. 2B (c. 2cm), worm damage to inner margin from sig. U1r to sig. 2B1v, with minor loss to marginal text. Closed tear, with small paper repair at margin, and small hole (1cm) to sig. 2D3. Loss to lower outer corner of sig. 2K1, with some damage to marginal text. Tear to sig. 2K2 (9cm), and hole to sig. 3R (c. 2.5cm), both affecting text. In concordances: sig. B6r, partial damage to 5 lines of text. Worm damage to inner margin, with minor loss to text, from sig. C2r to sig. Q3v. Moderate dampstaining from c. sig. B1r to rear of volume, mostly affecting c. 20 final pages, with some damp-spotting to final leaves of text and endpages. Verso of OT title page closely written with birth and death records of the Johnson family, dates ranging from 1638 to 1732. Further inscriptions to close of dedicatory epistle, one recording what seems to be a joint purchase of the book by 5 people, including a Samuel Johnson. Verso of NT title page has inscription 'November the ii 1692 I Samuell Johnson leave this booke after my death and his mother Mary's death unto my Son John and his children if he have aney and if non then to som of his brothers or sisters witness my hand Sa Johnson november ii 1692'. Almost identical inscriptions are written at the close of the OT dedicatory epistle and below the NT colophon: clearly it was most important to Johnson that this bible remained within the family. The 1709 marriage of Jane Johnson, daughter of Samuel Johnson, recorded on the blank verso of the NT colophon page, suggests that this was indeed the case for at least another generation. In 1633 Land was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury and for the next seven years he applied his considerable energies to the promotion of a national church that in its liturgy, its discipline and canons was sacramental without being Catholic and protestant without being puritan. His efforts ended in apparent ignominious failure on the scaffold, but though he could not force the establishment of his principles during his lifetime, the Anglican church he envisaged was the one which it eventually became. The Booke of Common prayer contains, printed in Black letter, A proclamation for the authorizing an uniformitie of the Booke of Common Prayer to bee used throughout the Realme. This proclamation was put into practise a year later with the production of a Book of Common Prayer for Scotland with disastrous results. 1 ESTC S122835. STC 16402 2) ESTC S2898. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Foolscap 4to (9 in x 6.5in). Title (A1) followed by the dedication To The Most High and Mightie Prince James., (A2-3), The Translators to the Reader (A4+8 pp. without signatures), The names and order of all of the Bookes of the Olde and New Testament, with the number of their Chapters (final page of foregoing without signature), The Old Testament, Apocrypha, and The New Testament (with separate title: London: Robert Barker and John Bill, 1630). Printed in English black letter in 72 lines double columns. The first edition of 1611 is in 59 lines double columns. Alfred Pollard, (Records of the English Bible, 1911 p.67) notes that the first change from 59 to 72 was "a folio reprint for church use in smaller type" reducing the leaves need from 732 to 508. According to this source ".a third edition in the largest type was published in 1617, a fourth in 1634, and a fifth in 1640". This copy of the 1630 quarto edition has four signed sheets followed by four unsigned sheets throughout. This copy does not have the 18 leaves of the Genealogies of Holy Scripture and a sheet with a map of Canaan. Pollard notes, "Inserted at the binder's pleasure after the preface.are usually eighteen leaves of the Genealogies of Holy scripture and a sheet containing a map of Canaan with a table.on the reverse. In October 1610 John Speed had obtained a privilege from the king enabling him for ten years to saddle every edition of the Scriptures with his decoratively printed but useless Genealogies so the cost of the book was needlessly increased." (Pollard, p. 63). So clearly the Genealogies and the map are not always present especially after 1621 and are John Speed's products, not inherent parts of the Barker Bible. Original blind tooled polished calf with blind initials IB at the top of the upper side and initials IW at the bottom over original hickory boards. Nailed brass center and corners on both sides, upper and lower sides nailed clasps for leather straps (no longer present). Old but not original endpapers and blanks at each end. Re-backed in brown calf over four original heavy cords. Fine professional re-backing to original blind decorated boards in clean attractive condition but with some minor calf loss at the edges. Brasses have round centers for "jewels", none present, and the leather strap for the clasps are gone. Endpapers and blanks at the front and back are replaced, but the original text begins with the general title (signed A) and ends with "finis" on the recto of the final leaf of the New Testament with the final imprint of Barker and Bill dated 1630 and the verso blank. Old by hand note of marriage of James and Ann Seredy August 9, 1781, on the first page of the dedication (A2) and other family history with dates of 1737-1796 on the verso of A3. Age toning and moderate soil, moderate water stain at the end increasingly fading inward within 10 sheets. General title is mounted on an old sheet. H10301 All Items Are Sent Insured.
