ZWEIG, Stefan. The Invisible Collection. Featuring a "missing fronticepiece" design by Joseph Goldyne. 8vo, bound in original boards. New York: Ursus Books, 2007. A handsome new edition of this classic fable about collecting. Zweig's story set in Germany in the aftermath of the First World War is timeless, and eloquently evokes the magic of collecting, the excitement of dealing, and the pleasures and complexities of ownership. Joseph Goldyne the distinguished California artist, who is himself a renowned collector, has thoughtfully produced a "missing fronticepiece" design which successfully solves the problem of how to illustrate a book, which on first reading would seem to defy the concept of illustration, and Peter Koch has designed and printed as elegant a version of Zweig's story as one could hope for. One of an edition of only 100 copies elegantly printed by Peter Koch in San Francisco, and containing a frontispiece designed by Joseph Goldyne consisting of a piece of original seventeenth century paper. The colophon is signed by both Peter Koch and Joseph Goldyne. As new. Bringhurst, Robert. JOSEPH GOLDYNE: Catalogue Raisonné of Books, Portfolios, and Calligraphic Sheets,008.

SHAKESPEARE, William. A Lovers Complaint. 8vo, bound in gilt-stamped three-quarter light blue morocco. London: The Nonesuch Press, 1933. The entire poem A Lovers Complaint extracted from perhaps the most satisfying edition ever printed. T.E. Lawrence describes his admiration in a glowing letter to the publishers: "We turn over to the Nonesuch Shakespeare. There you have created a most marvelous pleasure. I have handled it ever so many times, and read The Tempest right through. It satisfies. It is final, like the Kelmscott Chaucer or the Ashendene Virgil. And it is a book which charms one to read slowly, an art which is almost gone from us in these times. Every word which Shakespeare uses stands out glowing. A really great edition. The tact and grace of your editor have been surpassing. I think I like the size and shape and binding almost as much as the text. The paper, too, is just right. Altogether a triumph. One of the best things is that it can not be done again. Nobody will ever dare to produce the old type of edition now, while your text stands there to reproach them. It means a permanent improvement in Shakespeares" (letter to David Garnett, quoted in The Nonesuch Century, p. 47). Dreyfus 58. Ransom, p. 169. The Nonesuch Century 58.

CORPORATION OF LONDON. Proceedings in reference to the preservation of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Printed by order of the Corporation of London. [4], 88 pp. 8vo, red publisher's binding with gilt insignia and lettering on front outside cover. London: Benjamin Pardon, 1867. This collection of proceedings by the Bunhill Fields Preservation Committee documents the Corporation of London's efforts to ensure the safety of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, as the Corporation's lease was nearing its end (Christmas, 1867). Bunhill had been a burying ground of Nonconformists and other denominations since the sixteenth century. With the work of the committee, the Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament in 1867 preserving the burial ground as an open landscaped space with seating, gardens and the restoration of some of it most noteworthy monuments, including John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe and William Blake. The appendix contains a reprint of a rare tract from 1717, "Inscription on the Tombs in the Dissenters' Burial Place, near Bunhill Fields." Some wear to edges of binding, else fine.

BALZAC. Maximes. [iv], 197 pp. 8vo., bound in three-quarter brown morocco, with five raised bands on the spine, t.e.g., by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. London: Arthur Humphreys, 1912. A lovely copy in French and English, with the languages running alongside one another on facing pages. A beautiful compilation of these classic sayings, many of which concern the fair sex, and among which are "A woman of fifty will do anything for a man - a woman of twenty will do nothing." and "when we are in love we live in all three tenses at once." Also with a number of sayings on passion and art which influenced Ruskin. Fine, clean and uncut in a fine binding.
