The measurements of success have changed over time with programs to contribute to the prevention of war, to promote global economic development, to increase food production to forestall famine, and to revitalize the arts to enrich the quality of life. These programs were redirected in later years to include more women, minorities, and others outside the more traditional circles of influence. The Ford Foundation today remains the second largest in assets and third-largest in giving in the world.
Verne S. Atwater's career progressed from college teaching and banking to philanthropy. He then resumed his earlier career in education and, later, finance as chairman of a New York savings bank and, finally, as a professor of economics and finance in higher education. His background includes extensive board memberships and financial consulting.
From banking to philanthropy to publishing, Evelyn C. Walsh has enjoyed a wide-ranging professional career, most recently adding published poet to her list of credits. She was added to Who's Who of American Women in 1981 and was among an early group of senior executives elected to the YWCA's Academy of Women Achievers.
Atwater and Walsh's firsthand knowledge of the Foundation's early years makes them the ideal writers to chronicle the triumphs and challenges of this world-changing organization.
