This book is particularaly interesting as it avoids the common generalization of books and does so by concentrating on one function of railroads in the United States. for more than 150 years, mining and railways have been closely linked and the book takes you through the history of this relataionship over the years. It explores the ' coal roads' past and present, and the traction that developed to operate hem. There is quite stunning photography amongst the illustrations, inlcuding massive trains of coal laden wagons snaking their way across the central American plains, pulled by up to five locomotves coupled together.
