Críticas:
This well-written analysis of society's changing perception of motherhood is most timely. The examples which are taken from French literature and span three centuries illustrate the developing tensions between the demands of selfless motherhood and those of personal fulfillment, a problem which remains unsolved to this day. (Madeleine F. Morris, Graduate School of the City University of New York) A contribution to literary, social, and economic domains. Mann's study opens up new vistas for modernists to explore in her sensitive analysis of the multiple roles played by the MOTHER. (Bettina L. Knapp, Hunter College and the Graduate Center CUNY) Mann's descriptive typology of images of motherhood is a good beginning from which to address the many problems raised by the subject. ... Thanks to Mann's project, which has identified the dominant patterns of maternal representation in the canon, we now have a base from which to pursue a more theoretically informed inquiry. (Janie Vanpee, Eighteenth-Century Fiction)
