Not illustrated. 1862 edition. Excerpt: ...the hospital are generally made for large general hospitals in the following manner:--A purveyor for the hospital is designated by the surgeon in charge. The purveyor should, if possible, be some respectable produce-dealer in the neighborhood of the hospital. Each morning, or as often as necessary, the steward makes out a list of the articles needed, obtains the approval of the surgeon in charge, and sends it to the dealer, who procures the articles and sends them to the hospital. A special memorandum-book should be kept by the steward, in which he should keep copies of these lists for comparison with the articles actually furnished on their arrival, as well as for comparison with the monthly bill. It will be found most economical to make purchases of all articles not immediately perishable in sufficiently large quantities to obtain the advantage of wholesale price. At the end of the month a bill is made out in duplicate, and approved by the medical officer in charge, according to the following form:--Revised Reg., Art. XLIII. 1195. 15 I certify, on honor, that the above-specified articles were purchased on my requisition for the use of the siek in hospital under my charge.. Surgeon. Received at this day of, 186--, from Lieut, A.C.S., U.S.A., Dollars and Cents, in full of the above account. (signed In Duplicate.)
