Then the Head-without-Body disappeared. Then £wilEnkulag"ilis awoke, and he saw that it was daylight. 1 He arose at once and went into the water on the shore of 45 the lake; and after he had been in the water, he went down, following the river, while he was walking down river. When evening 48 came, he had not arrived at the mouth of the river. Then J he lay down under a cedar-tree; and when daylight came in the morning he arose and started. It was not yet noon when he arrived at the 50 mouth of the river £wagEla. Then he just sat down under a tree. They do not know what kind of a tree it was. He waited for evening. I Therefore he did so. As soon as evening came, he walked along the beach. Now it was dark when he j arrived on the east 55 side of the river Tstelgwad. Then he cried, "Wipi wip, wip!" aloud, so that his father should hear him. Then his father Waxap!alaso£ heard him. Immediately it occurred to Waxap!alaso£ to invite in his tribe when it would be evening, that they should come and try to surround him that 60 night. Thus he thought. Almost all his tribesmen had heard the cry: "Wip, wip, wip!" Therefore the Sparrow Society at once arose and went into the winter-dance-house of Waxap!alaso£ (for this name was given by the ancestors of the Kwakiutl to a winterdance-house. Only latel...
