Wilson is an intelligent and witty writer who builds subtle jokes into almost every situation. Ruggles is designed as the perfect straight man, with secondary characters responsible for most overtly forwarding the book's humour.

Harry Leon Wilson's tale of Marmaduke Ruggles in America is a pleasant read that will appeal to any fans of comedy from this era. Its breezy pace makes it a quick read, and one deserving of the accolades it has received.
