Kathryn Solms Wheeler was born to be a poet. A keen observer of life’s connections and contradictions, she started writing poetry in the fourth grade and, by high school, fellow students had dubbed her the “Emily Dickinson of the Island.” Winner of the prestigious Eerdmans’ Prize for Poetry when she graduated from college, she was invited by renowned poet Richard Hugo to join his MFA program at the University of Montana. Later, she was awarded the Michigan Council for the Arts grant for fiction, and was featured in "Who's Who of American Women." Although her poetry career was derailed by depression and disappointment, and her life was sadly shortened by a rare progressive lung disease, she left behind an impressive -- in quality if not quantity -- body of work, collected and published posthumously by her husband and literary executor, W. Donald Wheeler.
