Biografía del autor:
Judy Lawn has been writing for nearly thirty years. Her ideas for her stories and picture books come from her love of animals and nature, and a childhood spent in the country where she and her two brothers spent every school holidays exploring the countryside and beaches of New Zealand’s North Island. “We were always ‘off on some adventure’ no matter what the weather,” says Judy. “I’ve never forgotten the treasures we found – a beautiful shell, a brightly coloured sea slug, or even an octopus! It is from these memories that I get ideas for my stories.” A keen fisher, Judy’s first published short story was a ‘fishing yarn’, ‘Sam’s Kingie’. Other short stories have been published in various magazines, including New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, New Zealand /Australia Woman’s Day, and Takahe Magazine, while two children’s stories were produced on National Radio. Three adult novels have also been published, the first, ‘Progressions’ winning the 2005 Epic Award for best Single Title/Mainstream. Her ‘Rose Rountree’ mystery novels include, ‘Daisies Never Die’ and ‘Watch Over Me’. Her first children’s picture book was ‘The Shrimp Who Wanted to be Pink’, Reed Publishing (NZ) Ltd 2003. ‘Sebastian’s Tail’, Penguin Group (NZ) was published in 2008. Judy worked as a journalist on a small suburban newspaper for two years, publishing many profiles, writing advertorial, and taking many photographs. A long-held dream of starting her own publishing company came to fruition toward the end of 2011, with the launch of ‘Jupiter Publishing NZ Ltd’, and the publication of her non-fiction book, ‘Creative Writing’ in early 2012. A children’s picture book ‘Jossie’s New Home’ was published at the end of 2012, and a collection of her short stories, some previously published and some published for the first time was also released in 2012. ‘Works in progress’ are another non-fiction book, a historical romance, a young adult novel, a paranormal romance – and more children’s picture books and short stories. “I’m always writing something,” says Judy. Judy has been teaching creative writing for eight years, and plans to continue again this year. “It’s a great thrill to pass on all I have learned about the writing process,” says Judy. Reseña del editor:
Twelve year old Matt McAllister thinks his young foster brother, D, is weird, but when D persuades Matt to investigate a giant foot print at the quarry on their farm, Matt’s life changes forever. The footprint belongs to an enormous dinosaur, a barosaurus. The creature has a compelling gaze that Matt finds unnerving. He’s never had much affinity with animals – much to his father’s disgust – but something about the young barosaurus calls to him. The dinosaur leads the boys to a cave, through which it disappears; and when they follow, they time travel to Gondwana Land, a place more terrifying than anything Matt could imagine. D is entranced and eager to explore. ‘Believe’ he tells Matt, only Matt seems to ‘hear’ the word in his head – and he doesn’t want to believe any of it. He feels he’s wandered into one of D’s weird dreams and wishes he could ‘wake up’. When Matt’s friends Orange and PJ, turn up, followed by Orange’s sister, Samantha – the most annoying girl Matt knows – her friend, Melanie, and nosey newspaper man, Paul, Matt suddenly finds his life more complicated than it’s ever been. And why is the second hand of Paul’s watch speeding up? The young barosaurus has joined a large herd, and when they trundle away, D takes it into his head to disappear with them. Or has he been trampled to death? Matt knows he must go after D, find him and bring him home, to ‘take responsibility’, as his father is always telling him. He, Orange and the girls are left to fend for themselves in a hostile land, a land where time seems to be galloping. Matt realizes they’re all aging at a rapid rate. He and Orange have muscles, a strange strength beyond their years, and the girls have ‘curves’. What does it all mean? And what can he make of D’s voice he can ‘hear’ in his head? Who is D? Matt must find the answers to these questions, overcome his fear of animals, and get them all home to safety before they perish in this bleak, foreign world where time itself seems to be running out.
