In the summer of 1976 I bought my first pack of Topps baseball cards. I was mesmerized, not just by what was on the colorful fronts of those cards, but also by everything on the reverse sides: statistics, biographical information, and the zaniest, silliest, one-frame comics to rival even Bazooka Joe. For, every fourth grader wants to know that, "In the off-season, Ron works in Hawaii as a mechanic," next to a drawing of grinning Ronny Baseball with a lay of flowers around his neck and an oil can splattering his baseball uniform. In no time I was a fan of the National League's Philadelphia Phillies. Major League Baseball, I found, was a most popular institution able to base itself in honesty and respect on the numbers from its bygone past, as far back as the 1870s. The two oldest teams, I discovered, were the Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves. There were eight Classic National League squads in all, and eight Classic American League teams, and these rival leagues started having World Series tournaments in 1902, long before repeated expansion added 14 newer clubs to its ranks. Unfortunately, many millionaire "athletes" my age and younger have started to tarnish our beloved game's integrity. This book highlights these men's game-damaging offenses, and suggests more viable, appropriate consequences for known cheaters. The book was first released one month before the Biogenesis Scandal suspensions of 2013 were announced. After Ryan Braun, Alex Rodriguez, and Miguel Tejada's shenanigans hit the papers, the book was updated to its present 2nd edition form. Each year millions of boys and young men continue to play the game on baseball diamonds worldwide, with hopes, dreams, and integrity, in all seasons of the year, and with gusto that is not achieved through needles or PEDS. -author

"My dad wrote the book Close Off the Hall my senior year of high school, as a sort of gift to me. With six and a half pages of references, Dad worked meticulously, though finding some information puzzling when statistical sources varied regarding numbers from the earliest days of the game. To sum up the book, I use the word 'emphatic.' There are ideas in the book Close Off the Hall that are practical, possible, and noteworthy to improve the game from the commissioner's standpoint. Then the sportswriters too would have their part to play in saying "no" to retired fraudulent liars. This persuasive book is incredibly informative. When we read the news we only glean pieces of the big picture that is the sport of ML baseball. Hey, maybe dad is right." A 20th century (and previous) Hall might be in order later on. There are many stars who began their careers before the year 2001 and those can still can be voted in to the old Hall. The ones since 2003, however... yeesh. A more modern Hall of Fame for honest cads can be thought of much later. A "post-steroid era" Hall of Fame, not influenced by that overly lax Joint Agreement which slaps wrists up to three times blah-blah-blah.
