'Aching and Praying' is a children's book that illuminates the world of slavery and the role of religion and the Christian bible in justifying and supporting the institution of slavery. The story involves a black African slave who is helped to escape by the little daughter of his white owner. He escapes not only from the slavery of forced servitude but also from the mental slavery of religion. Many of his fellow slaves, however, remain enslaved to both their master and his religion. Many of the moments of the story are accompanied by relevant scriptures such as Matthew 25:23: 'His master said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.'
