"All law abiding citizens, especially peace officers, dentists, opticians, barbers, loggers, jewelers, and seamen, please read carefully and retain for future reference." Text, back panel. This ephemeral pamphlet was issued in 1926 by the United States Post Office for public notification about a bungled train holdup that took place nearly three years earlier in the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon. On October 11, 1923, the DeAutremont Brothers (Ray, Roy, and Hugh) attempted to rob a Southern Pacific Railroad postal car by forcing its conductor, at gunpoint, to stop the train while inside a tunnel. The amount of dynamite used to blow the door was excessive, resulting in total destruction of the car's contents and the eventual deaths of 4 rail and postal employees. The resulting manhunt was intense, and this circular was published to encourage the public's help in apprehending the notorious criminals. A brief summary of the affair is accompanied by detailed biographical descriptions of the three brothers, down to personal preferences, physical features, and a copy of their respective signatures. All three men were eventually caught and sentenced to life imprisonment in Oregon State Prison. Source."
