The German maritime company of Rickmers had an outstanding record when celebrating its 150th anniversary in 1984 --- it had remained in the one family over that time and operated as two entities, one with ships trading over many oceans, the other building ships going to the family fleet and other companies. Arnold Kludas, an established marine historian, completed his 19th maritime book with this Rickmer history which covers both arms of its enterprise. The company survived two world wars but suffered massive losses in both. In the 1914-18 conflict 11 of its 17 steamship fleet were lost, with five of its seven steamers lost at the opening of WWII, being scattered to various parts of the oceanic world. Several were replaced by ships seized by the Germans, but at the wars end any remaining were taken over by the Allies with Rickmers "once again back to zero." Not only did the company rebuild its fleet after both wars, but also survived the Great Depression between the two. The company had begun trading with large square rigged sailing ships but post 1939-45 became innovative in the maritime trading and technology, building ships of many types including large container carriers. This is a fine addition to the literature of a long-lived shipping company which faced many uncertainties, twice losing its fleets, but ovetrurning adversity to build ships again and to trade internationally. First English edition of 1984 from Koehlers/Herford, 128 pages including detailed lists of ships operated and built by the company. Illustrated throughout, with colour art showing a number of Rickmer ships, sail and powered, colour and b/w photos including portraits, shipyard plans, document and advertisment reproductions (some in colour) and chronology table, colour toned art end papers. Green hard covers with red spine titles and raised R to front board are NF, text block also NF, no inscriptions. Colour art DJ is VG++ and features a colour art painting of the steamer Sophie Rickmers which repeats the book's frontispiece. (The compay remains a major maritime institution through the Rickmers Group which operates as a service provider to maritime transport sectors. Its ships --- 130 of all types --- operate mainly European and Asian waters with HQ in Hamburg and a Asiatic office in Singapore.). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 005103
