19th century full calf, spine rubbed, running heads slightly shaved from middle of 4th part to the end of New Testament, occasional ink marginalia, some moder underscoring in red of French text in shoulder notes of NT, light damp staining to earlier leaves. Two early ownership inscriptions, 'Thomas Talli, Sperando spiro, possidendo potior' and Samuel Stall, sperando spiro, sperando dispereo'. A quarto volume, it measures approximately 8.75" x 6.75" x 3". This is the rare first edition of the first complete Latin Bible to be printed in England. Darlow and Moule 6166. Box - 5. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. The Old Testament translation is from the Hebrew and is the work of I. Tremellius and F. Junius; the Apocrypha is Junius's translation; and the New Testamnet is Tremellius's translation from from the Syriac. In this printing the main title and that of the NT are dated 1580 but all of the sectional titles bear the date 1579. Each Testament bears a different, handsome printer's device, there having been 2 different printers involved in the complete Bible's production: Middleton for the O.T. and Thomas Vautrollier for the NT.
